AMSTERDAM FEBRUARY 2004

During reading week Ian and I took off to Amsterdam for 3 nights. I definitely recommend www.expedia.co.uk if you want a great value, high quality mini break – we got three nights in a 5* hotel in the City Centre and return flights with BMi for less than £150 each, bargainous!

The highlight of our trip was probably the visit to the Heineken Museum – for about a fiver each you got three half pints of Heineken, a free lager glass and a snazzy Heineken tin, as well as a couple of hours looking around the Heineken factories, where there were also two (very very tame) simulator rides, it was really good fun! The other highlight was the fantastic curry we had at a restaurant called Shiva which we found recommended in the Lonely Planet guide – its got to be the best Indian I’ve ever had, in particular the gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous garlic tandoori chicken!

We also went a bit cultural and visited the Van Gogh museum which was full of noisy schoolchildren and some very famous paintings. We had been going to go to the modern art museum but found it was shut for renovations….typical!

Our hotel was on the edge of the Red Light District and we saw the women standing in the windows beckoning in the punters, which was strange and funny at the same time! The whole place seemed so laid back and nowhere near as seedy as you would expect – there were plenty of people wandering around with their children late at night without batting an eyelid at the people advertising sex shops and strip shows (before you ask, we gave these a miss! Too expensive, hehe)

Anyhow, it was a really good few days and got me really geared up for the our summer holiday – 14 days of fun in the sun, can’t wait!
