ATLANTIC DIVISION PREVIEWFrom Boston Globe and WBA TV |
ROCHESTER RAIDERS
Last seasons record: 42-38 Re-signed: None Drafted: PF/C Kurt Beck 1st rd (18th) FA signings: C Brad Martin, PG Leon Berthelson, SF/PF/C Jerry Sims, C Peter Langstraat Players acquired via trade: SF/PF AJ Schulz (ARK), C Joe Cochran (LI), SF Jamie Darnall (LI) Released: None Not returning from last year: PG Ethan Hunt, SF Norm Axelrod, PF Jack Berger, PF/SF Joe Clark, SF Bruce Johnson, PG/SG Storm Schmid Probable Starting 5: PG Jimmy Whalen, SG Dave Williams, SF Ramon Phelan, PF A.J. Schulz, C Jim McCarthy Key Reserves: PG Javonte Bolk , SF/PF/C Jerry Sims , C Brad Martin Overview: New nickname, same division and the preseason favorite to win the Atlantic pack. Rochester was second in line at the Arkansas/Washington fire sale and got A. J. Schultz. He should provide support for Jim McCarthy who is getting to the late years of his career. A. J. will work his way into an experienced frontcourt that includes three position man Jimmy Sims. Rochester will be hard pressed to hold off Brooklyn but may have done enough to get the job done. The backcourt of Whalen and Williams will need to care the early load as the new look frontcourt learn to share minutes and play with A.J as part of the mix. |
BROOKLYN RAGE
Last seasons record: 39-41 Re-signed: None FA signings: PG Bernie Henderson, SF/PF Gus Rizzolo, SF/PF Joe Clark Players acquired via trade: None Released: None Not returning from last year: SG/SF Scooter Jacobs, C Jake Cone, SG/SF Jay Dickinson Probable Starting 5: PG Omar Jefferson, SG Mario Bailey, SF Shane Strom, PF Jarius Miles, C Joe Siebert Key Reserves: PG Bernie Henderson, SF/PF Gus Rizzolo, C Larry Saunders Overview: No rookies for the Rage. They have a talented squad that can produce. If Rochester makes a wrong step, then Brooklyn is right there. Always a threat to be a good team the Rage need to kick it up a notch this season and a new division and new rivals may just inspire them to play to the level they are capable of. A solid starting 5 will be counted on to carry the load. Be interesting to see if this team is the same one we see at the end in a divison that figures to be close. Could the Rage look for a trade to get that extra push? It's a possibility. But they may not need to, this team is good, just up to them how good. |
TORONTO DINOS
Last seasons record: 33-47 Re-signed: Walt Jackson 5 year
extension @8.99 M Drafted: PG/SG Geoffrey Caldwell 1st rd (9th), C Hans Bryson 1st rd (23rd), SG/SF Pete Boyer 2nd rd (33rd) FA signings: C Simeon Hill, SG/SF Webster Hewlett, SF/PF Craig King Players acquired via trade: PG Justin Krueger (ARK), SG/SF Emmett Yee (ARK), PF Quade Nash (ARK) Released: PG Wesley Phillips, SG Jamie Moore, C Roy Golden, SG Murray Coleman Players Not Returning This Season: PF/C Christobal Dasher, SG/SF Quintin Pitt, PG Buck Jones Probable Starting 5: PG Justin Krueger, SG Emmett Yee, SF Walt Jackson, PF Harry Kramer, C Simeon Hill Key Reserves: PG Felipe Juarez, PG/SG Geoffrey Caldwell, C Kris Calhoun Overview: Toronto Dinos in just one season have changed its entire roster since their ownership change. If anyone doubted who's team this is it is no longer an issue. This is Walt Jackson's team, he will have some scoring help now with Emmett Yee but both have had health issues and that could spell doom for the Dinos. Hill is the younger replacement of Christobal Dasher and although he can rebound as good if not better his scoring or lack of scoring could be an issue. Dinos are a much better bet next year than this year but have talent to suprise if all the stars fall in line for them. Young and talented though with a bright future. Move East will help them too. |
BOSTON MASSACRE
Last seasons record: 26-54 Re-signed: John Greene 3 year
extension @8.70 M, Dave Short 3 year extension @9.50 M, Matthew
Pitcher 5 year extension @5.90 M FA signings:PG/SG Herman Burke, PF/C Grady Olson, C Al Zarra Players acquired via trade: None Released: None Players Not Returning This Season: PF/C George Holt, PF Sky Harrington, SF Josiah Gillies, SF Barry Allen Probable Starting 5: PG Danny Hainge, SG Pedro Otis, SF John Greene, PF Dave Short, C Matthew Pitcher Key Reserves: PG Hank Pynn, SF Jim Donnelly, C Al Zarra Overview: Boston along with Rochester are the only teams that played in the Atlantic last season. The Boston Massacre has done little to improve its fate from a 26 win season a year ago. Not to say they have done nothing but in comparison to some teams in the division it looks like it. Luca McMillan may be the bright spot in an otherwise dim year for Boston. The Massacre just seem to be a team that on paper looks good but seem to not live up to it on the floor. If they do not change their path they may have a hard go for years to come in this division. Why do you dish out money on extension for players on a team that won 26 games? Boston would have been better served to use the extra bucks on some free agent help. Hainge and company have the faith of ownership but it may be blind faith. |
Last seasons record: 32-48 Re-signed: Tyriq Lang 5 year
extension @6.20 M FA signings: SG/SF Jack Caze, SF Cody Wortman, SF Chip Honda, PG Johnny Burns, PF/C Leonel Coles Players acquired via trade: C Tyriq Lang (NY) Released: None Players Not Returning This Season: SF Jamie Darnall, SG/SF Tyler Durden, C Horace Colbert, SG Mitchel Gallagher, C Joe Cochran, SF Mike Sewell Probable Starting 5: PG Kadeem Reed, SG Paul Carroll, SF Tom Perkins, PF Sheldon Gorman, C Pat Stephenson Key Reserves: PG Oliver Doherty, PF/C Leonel Coles, C Tyriq Lang Overview: Could this be the year Espo's crew get it done? Playoffs? It is Montana, still maybe the move to Long Island will change the franchise fortune. A horrible start last season was to much to come back from in the tough west. But this is the east now. If and we stress IF, Long Island stays committed and does not push the panic button they could be very good. They should be a playoff team. But this franchise has had a well known history of lack of patience. So who knows but if these are the 14 guys that finish the season on this squad first we will be in a state of shock, second they should be in the playoffs. |
NEW YORK LIBERTY
Last seasons record: 26-54 Re-signed: None FA signings: PF/C Tom Kinsey, SG Lee Ford Players acquired via trade: PG Keith Douglas (ALB), C Glen Chandler (ALB), PG John Gaiser (SAC) Released: C Trenton Meehan, PG/SG Haznor Kolvanis, Players Not Returning This Season: SF/PF Camron Diaz, PG Jimmy Foster, SG Jerry Kumanchik, C Tyriq Lang, C Carlos Williams, SF/PF Patrick O'Connor, PG/SG Bill Magenheimer, SF David Kline Probable Starting 5: PG John Gaiser, SG Lee Ford, SF Art Campbell, PF Gary Agey, C Charles Cushman Key Reserves: PG Keith Douglas, PF/C Tom Kinsey, C Glen Chandler Overview: Hope. New York has it as new management is in place and the whole WBA fears what might be in New York. But trust us there is no reason to fear the only team named after a womens basketball team. Thats why you see the list of players not returning so high cause they played like a bunch of girls. Much like Toronto was last year in Roswell so is New York this year. But as Toronto has shown it is possible to turn over a bad roster in a hurry. With the respect bordering on fear that some in the league have for the new management no doubt New York will improve but not enough to avoid a trip to the draft lottery in Sacramento at WBA Headquarters. |
BALTIMORE PIRATES
Last seasons record: 39-41 Re-signed: Don Laine 5 year extension @6.93 M (NTC) Drafted: SG Jim Woods 1st rd (28th), PG/SG Frank Ryan 2nd rd (32nd), SF Justus Rhodes 2nd rd (40th), PF/C Keven Rollin 2nd rd (51st) FA signings: PF/C Jamie Crouch, SG/SF Jay Dickinson Players acquired via trade: SF/PF Derek Vinyard (OMA) (Released) Released: SF/PF Derek Vinyard, PG Johnny Burns, C Zane Rivers, PG Players Not Returning This Season: SF Lonnie Graham, PG Stub Madison, PG/SG Steve Vernie, PG Bailey Wood, SF Lance Armstrong Probable Starting 5: PG Anson Valente, SG Jay Dickinson, SF Mike Ivey, PF Jamie Crouch, C Don Laine Key Reserves: PF/C Clarence Collins Overview: Cap trouble in the offseason has worried some about Baltimore and the place they hold in this divison. They are a team that really will be hard to figure. Where ever you decide to place Baltimore do it in led not ink. The could finish anywhere from 1st to 5th and may not even make the playoffs or could have home court. We honestly don't have a good read on Baltimore but if any team is going to under achieve this is the safest bet in this divison. A team who has trouble with the cap always concerns us though and makes us have less faith in management. See Alaska for proof. |
