Narcissus
Narcissus was the son of the river god Cephisus and the nymph Liriope. Narcissus was indifferent to love; although many girls threw themselves at the handsome youth, he ignored them all. Then the nymph Echo became enamored of him; he ignored her as he had all the others. In despair she withdrew from society and faded away until all that was left of her was her plaintive voice. The girls who had been rejected by him asked the gods for vengeance. Nemesis heard their prayers and answered them. He arranged for Narcissus to see his reflection in a quiet stream when he bent over to drink from it. Narcissus fell in love with that reflection and stayed there looking at it till he starved to death. On the spot where he died a flower appeared - the narcissus.
