Uranus
Uranus means "king of the mountains".
He was the oldest of the gods in Greek mythology, and was the personification
of the heavens. Gaea (Earth), with Chaos, produced Uranus and the Mountains
and the Sea. From her union with Uranus was born six male Titans, six female
Titanides, the three Hecatoncheires, the three Cyclopes, and others. Uranus
hated, and feared, his children and hid them within Gaea's body (in the womb
of the earth, i.e. Tartarus). Gaea, very uncomfortable with this arrangement,
pleaded with them to avenge her. Only the Titan Cronus obeyed her. When Uranus
approached Gaea, Cronus sprung upon him and cut off his testicles with a
sickle. Some of the blood spattered on Gaea and from the blood was born the
Furies and the Giants. The genitals were tossed into the sea producing a white
foam from which was born Aphrodite. (This is the most popular of the many
conflicting myths about Uranus and Gaea.
