What is SOC/PS 280?  280 is Cooperative Education and Service Learning.

You can receive academic credit in Sociology or Political Science/Conflict Studies by working in an organization that provides service to others through a range of activities including advocacy, political organizing, community building, human services, and education.  This service can be paid or voluntary.

SOC/PS/ 280A = worksite placement.  Credit for the work you provide to the community.

SOC/PS 280B = 3 credit hour, team-taught seminar that meets once a week.

(PS 280C = Peace and Conflict Studies worksite placement)

Why should I sign up for 280?

1) Valuable experience in the field you choose:  This helps bridge the “no-experience” gap that many job-seekers face, and will make you more competitive when applying for professional jobs and post-PCC education (4-year and graduate schools).

2) Vast array of choices:  There are hundreds of types of positions available to suit your interests.  If you’re already working in a community service position, you can start receiving credit.   If you aren’t, we have positions (paid and volunteer) available.  Visit the Cooperative Education Office in the CC Bldg (CC 221) or talk to one of the instructors.

3) Desired skills (organizational, communications, outreach, team building, public speaking, etc.):  These are skills you can utilize in other workplace, academic settings, and “real life.”

4) Personal, academic, political and community development:  Service learning allows you to see more of the big picture and how you can make a difference in your community. If you’ve already had a service-learning experience in a class, here’s an opportunity to extend and deepen your learning and your involvement.

5) Test out a career path and find out if it's right for you—learn about different options!

What is the seminar about? (280B)

The course is team-taught by two instructors, representing Political Science, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Sociology.  These instructors will facilitate discussions and activities on the social, psychological, and political aspects of service in the community.  Some topics include:  diversity, ethics and values, group interaction, public policy, stress and burnout, lobbying, community building, helping relationships, and mentoring.

How do I know how many credits I can receive?

The 280B seminar is worth 3 credits, and is a regular course.  280A, worksite placement, offers one hour of credit for every 30 hours of work during the term.  You need to co-enroll for at least one hour of 280A when you take the 280B seminar. This will be explained in class. You’ll need a permission slip from one of the people listed below to register for 280A credits.

How do I register?

Choose to register for Sociology or Political Science.  Although you would take the seminar (280B) only once, you may accumulate worksite placement hours (280A) under different disciplines for different terms.  Generally, up to 12 hours of 280A will transfer as elective credits when you graduate to another institution (talk to your academic advisor).
