Exploration in Blue

Date Completed: 05/06/01
Exploration in Blue is a series of pieces that is yet being produced. It began with this one, done with a plain blue ballpoint pen on the outside of an information folder made of nice, heavy-stock paper.
The evening before I did this one, my wife and I had been to see The Mummy Returns with some friends... Opening night, no less! You can see that it made an impact in the creative pudding of my mind, what with the nonsense-Egyptian glyphs and all.

This the second Exploration piece I did, and I think it was during or shortly after my work on this one that I decided on an overarching title for this and whatever else might come after.
Although I didn't have any story in mind beyond "CP and Rad exploring", I definitely had in mind that this picture happens before the first picture, in whatever story there is.
I also brainstormed about certain adventure aspects of the picture. Was the bridge there before they arrived? What are the carvings to the sides of the left-hand door? I pictured them perhaps standing at the edge of the right-hand passage with nothing between them and the far door but a long, dark drop. Then they held out the ornate scarabs which trembled and sprang to life, fluttering across and settling into the stones by the door and causing the bridge to extend for them. . .

Number three in the Exploration in Blue series. Originally, I fancied the title Exploration in Blue because, in certain artsy types, it might invoke an idea of splashy, abstract paintings with all sorts of different shades of blue swirling about, and I thought it would be fun to scandalize such people with a set of very concrete and at least somewhat realistic sequential art ("Comics!, they might disdainfully correct me)!
The actual meaning is a whole lot less pretentious: It's bits of a story about exploration, and it's done in blue ink.

Again, drawn on a piece of heavier paper stock, actually the back of a brochure. Very handy stuff for someone who doesn't mind working in a 3x3-inch space!
Though Rad is not pictured here (he's inside the window), I'm thinking that this picture happens either just before or just after the third picture.

I've been giving a lot of thought to Cyberpumpkin's origins: Why he is what he is, how he came to be and by whom. Miraculously, I seem to have hit upon an idea that would tie in very nicely with this series, turning it into a sort of adventure to find information, or perhaps some relic from his past.

Cyberpumpkin swoops down across the abyss of the chamber, sword in hand, as Rad looks on from a torch-lit landing.

Rad and CP make their way through a dangerous area where things lurk in the shadows, their way lit only by CP's jack-o-lantern light.

This piece was originally in color, but it fit in so well with the Exploration series, I had to include it. You can view the original picture here.
