"DISCOVERING RASTAFARI"
Smithsonian Launches Exhibit on 77th Anniversary of Ethiopian Coronation

The Smithsonian Institute's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC, launched the "DISCOVERING RASTAFARI" Exhibit on Friday, November 2, 2007, in celebration of the 77th Anniversary of H.I.M. Emperor Haile Selassie I and Empress Menen's coronation. A number of Rastafarian Communities, the Jamaican Government and the UNIA were among the attendees celebrating the opening ceremony.

Nyahbinghi Ises, and opening remarks were made by the House of Nyahbinghi, Jamaica, the Ethiopia Africa Black International Congress, the Twelve Tribes of Israel, the Rastafari Community of Washington, D.C. Jakes Homiak, Director of Anthropological Research, Smithsonian Institution, Paul Risser, Director of the National Museum of Natural History. Steven Golding, on behalf of the UNIA Jamaican Division and the Jamaican Minister of Information and Culture, spoke eloquently on the significance of the exhibit and the contribution of the Rastafarian Movement to the world.

Once the formal ceremony ended, a number of attendees stayed to socialize and reacquaint themselves with others. Later that evening, 8:00 to 10:00pm, the attendees enjoyed a live performance by Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus at the National Museum of Natural History's Baird Auditorium.

The Exhibition will last until Novemeber 2008 with the possibility of extending beyond that.
