BLACKPRINT FOR A NEW JAMAICA
A Publication of the Marcus Garvey Memorial Division
In July of 2009, the Kingston Division of the UNIA will celebrate its 95th anniversary. We hold a unique place in history, representing the very FIRST of hundreds of UNIA divisions that were formed around the world, and one of only two divisions organized by Marcus Garvey himself! The world powers of the day were opposed to the liberating spirit of the Garvey movement and conspired to target and persecute our Founder. Still, Garvey became Jamaica’s first national hero and is seen widely across the globe as the grandfather of modern Pan-Africanism. The sacrifices he made in order to advance the Universal Negro Improvement Association’s program of African Redemption should not be forgotten nor should they be for naught.
Today, almost a century since the movement began, issues such as low self esteem, lack of racial pride, indiscipline, abuse, and self destruction threaten to destroy the fabric of our society. Jamaica is in need of healing and GARVEYISM is the perfect prescription. The UNIA has responded by developing programs and projects designed to build confidence, conviction, and encourage positive action among our members. Join us in our efforts to restore morality, foster loyalty and secure the future of our nation. “Up you mighty race!”

This is certainly a significant point in history, and the Universal Negro Improvement Association is happy to continue to build on the legacy of our founder. Marcus Garvey felt the pulse of his people and inspired them with race consciousness and hope. His belief that through education, self-reliance, and unity, the Negro would take his rightful place at the global table, represents our firm conviction as an organization. We are committed to self improvement and wealth creation for all our members, ordinary and active.
The Garvey mission carries the message of preparedness, which is the watchword of the age. Our philosophy as handed down from our Founder remains the same, that we can achieve whatever is possible by hard work, sheer determination and by using the active intelligence of our minds. As the UNIA moves forward into the 21st century, let us encourage each other to live the principles of Garveyism in our everyday lives, and to be strong in all ways that will bring credit to our race, our communities and our nation. Garvey’s legacy lives on through our work. One God! One Aim! One Destiny!
