"The Truth from an Ancient Time."

"I arrived in this country [USA] in 1916, I discovered that the Negro press had no constructive policy. The news published were of all the kind that reflected the worst of the race's character in murder, adultery, robbery, etc. These crimes were announced in the papers on front pages by glaring and catchy headlines; other features played up by the papers were dancing and parlor socials of questionable intent...

In 1918-19 I started the Negro World to preserve the term Negro to the race as against the desperate desire of other newspapermen to substitute the term 'colored' for the race. Nearly all the newspapers of the race had enetered into a conspiracy to taboo the term 'Negro' and popularize the term 'colored' as the proper race term. To augment this they also fostered the propaganda of bleaching out black skins to light complexions, and straightening out kinky or curly hair to meet the 'standard' of the new 'society' that was being promoted...

These advertisements could also be found in any of the Negro papers published all over the country influencing the poor, unthinking masses to be dissatisified with their race and color, and to 'aspire' to look white so as to be in society. I attacked this vicious propaganda and brought down upon my head the damnation of the 'leaders' who sought to make a new race and a monkey out of the Negro.

The Negro World has rendered a wonderful service to journalism in the United States. It has gradually changed the tone and make-up of some of the papers, and where in 1914-15-16 there was no tendency to notice matters of great importance, today several of the papers are publishing international news and writing intelligent editorials on pertinent subjects. It has been a long a costly fight to bring this about.

We need crusaders in journalism who will not seek to enrich themselves off the crimes and ignorance of our race, but men and women who will risk everything for the promotion of pride, self respect, love and integrity... Situated as we are, in a civilization of prejudice and contempt, it is not for us to inspire and advertise the vices of our people, but, by proper leadership, to form characters that would reflect the highest credit upon us and win the highest opinion of an observant and critical world."

- The Right Excellent Dr. Marcus Garvey, Founder & 1st President-General UNIA-ACL, Creator & 1st Managing Editor: NEGRO WORLD

On August 17th 1918, Marcus Garvey founded The Negro World, “a newspaper devoted solely to the interests of the Negro race”. Two years later he incorporated the first steamship company founded by Africans in America to be traded publicly, under the name of the Black Star. It was to be his greatest undertaking in a most radical attempt to revolutionize the world economy with the creation of an independently viable and commercially competitive African based market The Negro World, based in Harlem New York City became the instrument of communication for this revolution. It was a vital artery carrying a stream of consciousness to the minds and souls of Africans throughout the diasopra, at home and abroad.

Controversy surrounded this Jamaican born Moses of our time. His battle cry of Africa for the Africans was not a popular stance among the ruling racists, imperialists and capitalists of the time. Even today the notion of Africa for the Africans is still unpopular among many including blacks. What a pity, in a world where Europe is now planning to become one union, Garvey’s own cry for a United Africa having one aim and one destiny, went unheard for almost a century. We have not done this man justice and it is time we repay our debt to his courageous leadership and sacrifice in the quest for African nationalism. Truly this man was a prophet, and his words shall come to pass.

“…my cause shall rise again to plague the conscience of the corrupt. For this I am satisified, and for you, I repeat, I am glad to suffer and even die… I shall write the history that will inspire the millions that are coming and leave the posterity of our enemies to reckon with the hosts for the deeds of their fathers.”

Within a few years of publication, The Negro World was banned in almost every other country of the world by the ruling European colonial governments of the time. In America shipments of The Negro World were constantly and conventiently lost or destroyed by the government’s postal services as they conspired with foreign offices to keep the paper out of circulation in the black diaspora. Yes Africans, our freedom of speech has always been a battle especially when that speech empowers us to take action, motivate each other and protect our dignity universally as Africans.

In 1933 The Negro World was discontinued from print, but on November 2nd 2000, Whirlwind Storm Communications, a UNIA-ACL cyber-publishing company in Harlem, sought to re-awaken the consciences of Africans. WWW.NEGROWORLD.COM became the new artery circulating the vision of Marcus Garvey. Arise young lions and step boldly in the quest for Africa's Redemption.
