  Independant Analysis and Certification of Supplements

  Currently there is barely any U.S. government oversight of the safety and efficacy of vitamins, minerals and herbal and nonherbal supplements. Not even the USP seal from United States Pharmacopeia, the organization that sets standards for vitamins and minerals recognized by the U.S. government, means that products have been certified by an independent source. Compliance to the standards is voluntary, and the use of the USP seal is infrequently monitored. Only the manufacturer knows if the label information accurately reflects the actual contents and their strength. According to ConsumerLab.com, of the 20 top-selling dietary supplements (500 products) it has evaluated, 15% of vitamins and minerals and 40% of herbals failed their tests, principally because they contained less of the active ingredient than the label claimed. A few had too much of certain vitamins, and some failed because they contained pesticides or heavy metals, such as lead in calcium. Companies listed below offer certification for a fee. They also don't disclose the names of supplements that failed tests, and there are many unsettled issues about consistent testing methods.

• ConsumerLab.com - independant testing company with on-line results for minerals, vitamins, sports supplements, fortified foods and beverages
• Consumer Reports - tests for safety and efficacy but investigate only a small fraction of the supplements on the market. Consumer Reports take no fee but charges consumer to access its reports
• NSF International - not for profit organization offering independent, third-party, product evaluation services to the dietary supplements industry. Verification of ingredients listed on product labels and contaminant testing are the basis of the program
• Supplement Watch - dietary supplement information and product review website (provides unbiased scientific reviews of branded dietary supplements, along with ratings and purchasing recommendations, also offers descriptions of supplement ingredients, nutrition and wellness articles, an email newsletter and an interactive nutrition counselor)
• United States Pharmacopeia - launched Dietary Supplement Verification Program. Based on USP’s assessment of the manufacturer’s capability to produce a dietary supplement and testing to USP standards, USP will issue a certification mark that can be used by the manufacturer on the dietary supplement container label. The presence of this mark on a dietary supplement product container is an indication that the product contains the dietary supplement ingredient in the designated amount, meets acceptable limits of undesirable elements, and is manufactured appropriately. What many consumers don't realize, though, is that the use of the USP letters is based on self-certification. Neither United States Pharmacopeia nor the F.D.A. tests the products to see if they are in compliance.
