A
Autodesk Visualization Award - An award for creating the best original 30-second animation with Autodesk's 3D Studio Max, animation is about what FIRST means to your team.
Autonomous Mode - A period of time in which the robot must be able to drive and control itself.

B
Banner Sensor - See Optical Sensor.

C
C - Programming language used to program robots for the FIRST competition.
Caster - A wheel that is able to swivel 360° on its own.
Channel - One of 40 frequencies that the radios can transmit on. A different channel is needed for all four robots on the field, or signals will be mixed.
Chiaphua Motor - A cylindrical motor generally used as a drive motor.
CIM Motor - See Chiaphua Motor.
Circuit Breaker - A small device which limits the current running through it.
Coach - A team member or mentor allowed in the driver station during a match, not allowed to control the robot or act as a human player.

D
Dead Reckoning - A robot which uses set travel distances to navigate during autonomous mode.
Disabled - A condition in which the robot is shut down from communication with the Operator Interface, a robot is disabled when a robot becomes dangerous or commits a serious foul.
Drill Motor - A two-gear motor from a 12v Bosch drill, generally used as a drive motor.
Driver - A person who controls their team's robot on the field.
Drive Motor - A motor used in the drive train.
Drive Train - Series of components in a robot that allow the robot to move. Includes the motor(s), gears, chain, gearbox, sprockets, and wheels (or treads).

E
Electronics - System of components, including the Robot Controller, circuit breakers, Spikes, Victors, fans, sensors, radio, and wiring. The electronics make up the "nervous system" of the robot.

F
Fischer Price Motor - Geared motor from Fischer Price Big Wheels.

G
Globe Motor - A small, slow, but very powerful motor.

H
Human Player - A person on a team other than a driver or coach who performs a specific task during the play of the game.

I
Inventor Award - Award sponsored by Autodesk, the goal is to use the Autodesk Inventor program to design the robot.
Infrared Sensor - A device which is able to navigate towards certain Infrared signals allowing a robot to navigate towards a certain point on the field very quickly during autonomous mode.

L
Line Tracker - A robot which is able to follow a white line during the autonomous period of competition.

O
Operator Interface - Component of the human controls which communicates with the Robot Controller. The Operator Interface contains lights that give feedback to the driver about the robot.
Optical Sensor - A sensor which reads in light and then uses the inputs to execute a certain command. Very useful for line tracking in autonomous mode.

P
Pneumatics - A system that uses pressurized air to extend or retract pistons.

R
Radio - A broadcasting device on the robot or drivers station which transmits data to another radio on the same channel. Radios transmit data to and from the Operator Interface and Robot Controller.
Robot Controller - Central component of the robot, acts as the "brain" for the entire robot. Interacts with the Operator Interface through radio or tether.

S
Seat Motor -
Spike Relay - An on/off switch which can control certain motors.

T
Tether - A 9-pin cable running from the Operator Interface to the Robot Controller for a close-range connection used in lieu of a radio.
Transmission - A gearbox that has multiple speeds that it may run on, usually consisting of a pnuematic shifter that changes gear ratios.

V
Van Door Motor - An extremely strong motor with an output shaft, very useful for pulley systems.
Victor Motor Speed Controller - A device which gives an output to a motor telling it on which speed to run.

W
Window Motor -

Y
Yaw Sensor - A sensor which is able to determine the angle at which a robot is sloped.

Z
Zip-ties - Plastic fasteners used to hold parts together, especially eletronics. Made by the 3M Corporation.
