Before Mikhail became the ruler of the Carpathians his father Vladimir along with his lifemate ruled with vision and kindness. Vladimir saw the troubles coming to his people but stayed firm to his role as leader. He knew that their women were fewer and that less and less female children were being born to their couples. He sent warriors to different countries to protect mortal and immortals alike. Those who volunteered would be giving up all hope they would eventually have to meet the dawn or they would turn vampire. The twins Lucian and Gabriel children to his second in command also volunteered but Vladimir wanted them to stay in their homeland.
Many Carpathians were lost during the time of the Turk invasion. Gregori's parents as well as Vladimir who died trying to save a human village. Entire villages had been destroyed and children were herded together and burned. During this time the Carpathians lost most of their women, many men and nearly all their children. Among those lost were a brother and sister of Gregori's. In the middle ages and just after vampires lived among the humans. Preying on their fears and killing not hiding their true nature. The vampires were hunted but the greatest vampire hunters the twins disappeared during this time. After it fell on the shoulders of Mikhail, Gregori and Aidan to hunt the Vampires and insure that they remained figments of the humans imagination. They thought to be successful but what they left behind was enough to plant seeds that would later create a society that started to plague them.
