Stageside with the Marquette University Symphonic BandThe Marquette University Symphonic Band is set to release its first ever concert band compact disc. Titled "Stageside with the Marquette University Symphonic Band", the compact disc contains eight of the band's best concert performance songs recorded live at the concerts. Right now the CD is being printed and will be out very soon. It contains such songs as "Flower Drum Song", "Hurray for Hollywood", and "Russian Christmas". It is the Marquette Band's second CD. The other CD, "Courtside with the Marquette University Golden Eagles Band", was released in 1996. Be sure to keep an eye on the Marquette Band's webpage (http://www.marquette.edu/band/) to see when the new CD will be out and ready to order. Then you can take the Marquette University Symphonic Band home with you. Band to Perform Winter ConcertThe Marquette University Symphonic Band will host a Winter Concert on Sunday, December 5th, at 2:00 pm in the Varsity Theatre. It will be a festive concert as the conductor Dr. Nicholas Contorno leads the Symphonic Band in the holiday concert. Such music selections as "Flourish for a Glorious John", "A Christmas Festival", "Music for a Festival", "The Planets: Mars", and "Marquette University March" will be performed. Get in the holiday spirit and support your Marquette University Symphonic Band. Band Alumni E-mailThe Marquette Band now has its own e-mail account at Marquette. On this account there is a database of all alumni who wish to receive periodical e-mails from the band as to upcoming current events, such as concert information, alumni pep bands, and information about CDs. It is a great way to keep up to date on the band. If you are interested in being added to the alumni e-mail list, just e-mail the band at muband@marquette.edu. Jazz Ensembles SwingingThe Marquette University Jazz Ensembles performed their first concert of the year this past November 4th in the Weasler Auditorium. Led by Assistant Director of Bands Mr. James Krofta, the two bands played in a tribute to "Duke" Ellington. Thanks to all who came and supported. On Febuary 6th, 2000, Marquette will host the 33rd annual Marquette University Jazz Invitational, where several of the top area high school jazz ensembles will be peforming, as will the Marquette University Jazz Ensembles. Then on April 2nd, 2000, the Marquette University Jazz Ensembles will perform with the Carroll College "Project Create" Percussion Ensemble in a tribute to Milwaukee's own Woody Herman. Come and support! From the Marquette Band Alumni AssociationGreetings from the Marquette University Band Alumni Association! I've been told that this newsletter may be going out to more alumni than ever before, so if this is your first time, welcome! We hope you enjoy these periodic updates on what the Marquette Band is doing. Incidentally, if, for whatever reason, you wish to be taken off the list, feel free to contact me in any of the ways listed below. I will forward any removal requests immediately, but it may take a while before the system gets everything processed. Now that the official stuff is out of the way, let's talk about the fun stuff! First, you will notice the form for the Annual Alumni Game has been uploaded here. The location of the reception will be the the Third Street Pier, which isa new locale for us, and I'm quite excited about it. It's more upscale than the places we've been, it has a nice atmosphere, and best of all, we're getting an entire room dedicated to our reception. There should be plenty of space for us to mingle, which was a complaint of past receptions. Second, there will be no Alumni Pep Band. Logistically, it isn't going to work out. There has not been enough support for me to pursue the idea at the present time. My apologies for those of you looking forward to this. Perhaps at a later date, it will happen. Finally, since we are reaching a greater audience, this is a prime opportunity for me to solicit feedback from more members of the Band Alumni community. What would you like to see either in the newsletter or the web site? All suggestions will be considered. You can get in touch with me in any of the following ways:
Thanks, and I'll see you on January 15th! -Phil Zeman -- Vice-President of the Marquette University Band Alumni Association Take the Marquette Pep Band Home With YouBefore the new CD comes out, make sure to get "Courtside with the MU Band", a CD of all your favorite pep band songs as heard at Marquette Basketball games. Pep Band "Ringing Out" the New SeasonThe Marquette University Pep Band season has started as Marquette's men's and women's basketball teams have taken the court for the 1999-2000 season. Enthusiam is high for this year's teams, as the men have a strong, young new coas in Tom Crean, and the women look to head to the NCAA tournament for the fourth straight year. The Pep Band will accompany the teams to their conference tournament trips in March (Memphis for the men, Louisville for the women) and to any other postseason tournaments in which the teams participate.
