To All Band Alumni:

March 13, 1998

Dear Band Alum:

Greetings from the Marquette University Band Alumni Association.

For those of you who haven’t heard the unfortunate news, Dr. William J. Geisheker, affectionately known as "Mr. G.", passed away this past January. Mr. Geisheker was the band director from 1940 until his retirement in 1983. His presence will be missed greatly. To honor Mr. G., the Marquette University Band Alumni Association has begun two projects in his memory.

First, on Sunday, April 19, 1998, at 2:00pm, the Symphonic Band will perform its annual Spring Concert. This concert will be a tribute to Mr. G., as most of the songs to be performed are songs he would have chosen during his tenure. The final two songs of the concert will be "Ring Out Ahoya" and the "Marquette Anthem" (the Alma Mater.) As tribute, the Symphonic Band and Band Alumni Association are inviting all Band Alumni who can be at the concert to bring their own instruments and play along during these songs.

The second memorial project will interest all alumni. The Band Alumni Association, with the help of Marquette University, has set up the Geisheker Memorial Fund. Money raised for this fund will be set aside for one of the things Mr. G. enjoyed the most: the carillon bells. He continued to play the carillon up until his death, letting the music resound across campus.

A gift of $25, $50, or whatever amount you could contribute, would be greatly appreciated. The Band Alumni Association hopes to have this Fund started by the time the Spring Concert comes, and we want the Fund to continue growing so that work on the carillon can start as soon as possible.

Therefore, we need your feedback and help for both these projects. If you wish to play at the concert, be advised that you must bring your own instrument, as there will not be extra instruments available for you to use. We have set up April 8 as the target date for responses to be in, so that information could be printed in the Spring Concert program.

For more information, or to expreses your desire to play at the Spring Concert, please respond via E-mail to Phil Zeman at pnzeman@inetcess.com.

We hope will join us in honoring the man who gave his life for the Marquette University Band.

Sincerely,

The Marquette University Band Alumni Association
