Dark Wings
He dressed her wounds and watched over her as she slept
He wiped off the mascara that had run from when she wept
If he hadn’t been there she’d probably be dead
He rescued her from that man who put a gun against her head
Then he brought her home and lay her down in the bed
And remembered the things he knew he shouldn’t have said
Her breathing quickened and then she awoke
To reassure her he chose carefully the next words that he spoke
“It’s ok I’m here, I didn’t leave you alone
I shut all the blinds and unplugged the phone”
“I couldn’t sleep, I had a nightmare
And I could have sworn I saw you in there”
“I can see that you won’t sleep well
So I’ll put you at ease, and tell you a tale
There he sat clothed in white
He was a sacred angel
A being of light
Until the day that he fell
As he looked down on Earth he shed a tear
How could he live in happiness while humans were living in fear
Then he looked for a way to return to our plane
So he could endure some of our torment and pain
He knew he did enough but he wanted to do more
So he opened and stepped through the forbidden door
Then looked back on the life he chose to forsake
He turned around and saw a hole in the floor
Spread apart his wings, ready to soar
And thought about the step he was about to take
He jumped into the tunnel not knowing where it would end
White with gold wings, couldn’t catch the wind
Falling in fright he toppled down the well
Landed with a thud and woke up in Hell
Consumed by the fire created with the crash
He struggled to rise up out of the ash
His wings burned with Hellfire
And as they looked upon his face
His eyes burned with a desire
To get out of that place
The fire went out but the demons didn’t attack
He looked around and saw his wings had turned black
But somehow in that land of never ending night
The fire hadn’t touched his body, his skin still shone white
They named him Shadow the dark winged knight
Half hidden in darkness, half bathed in light
He ran from that world no longer able to fly
And didn’t feel safe until he saw the sun rise in the sky
So when you wake up in a sweat
And your skin is all wet
Don’t be afraid it’s just a scare
He’ll break through the walls of your nightmare
But I know the way it seems
I am that imaginary man in your dreams
But I’m just an ordinary human
I break promises and I commit sin
Not knowing how many fights he’d had because he never kept track
He walked on without a word, not knowing if he’d ever be back
She tried to call after him but couldn’t because of the lump in her throat
As she noticed the black feather floating, having fallen out of his coat
