The Winton Unit of the Queensland State Emergency Service covers the area of the Shire of Winton and has three Groups, being Corfield, Middleton and Winton, with a radio base at Opalton. The Units last large scale operation was the flood in the Winton area in February 2000 where most of the area was affected by huge amounts of rain and water flowing from other areas. The unit undertook numerous rescue tasks as well as salvage and temporary repairs of damaged premises and the delivery of fodder to animals and food to trapped people.

Our Unit has two flood boats which are used for flood rescue and search and rescue in the many creeks and channels within our area. We are waiting on the arrival of our new four wheel drive rescue vehicle and there is also a rescue trailer, which is equipped with the required rescue and emergency management equipment.

We train on Tuesday evenings, at the SES Local Headquarters (behind the Shire Offices) between the hours of 6.30pm and 8.30pm. Our training is varied and mainly consists of the activities we are responsible for under our Shire and State Disaster plan. Our membership is made up of both males and females from all walks of life, from retired people to nurses, and are of all ages. Not all our members are directly involved in rescues, and those members take on training in communications, welfare, operations support, etc. If you're interested in joining us, or would like more information regarding the State Emergency Service, please feel free to e-mail us.

Winton is famous for being the home of Australia's unofficial national song "Waltzing Matilda" and it is also creditied for being the birthplace of the international airline QANTAS. There is also evidence of a dinosaur stampeed out at Lark Quarry and some of the world's best boulder opals come from Opalton. The Winton shire's main produce is cattle and sheep, as during good seasons the grazing is fantastic. The weather is usually quite hot (anywhere up to 45 degrees centigrade, and in Winter is can get down to freezing at night.
