Cuba's vibrant cultural scene stirs the soul and imagination of visitors. Cuban culture has its roots in the fusing of Spanish and African cultures. The national identity and spirit int he arts draw inspiration from a passionate and turbulent history-an expressive searching over centuries of a creative people confined in an authoritarian world.
Some would say Havana only really gets going after dark, when the slow pace and heat-induced stupor of the day finally wears off. This is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city with many bars, discos, and theaters to choose from.

Cuba has a strong tradition in the performing arts. Cuban musicians, playing in a range of styles, are world-renowned. The Cuban National Ballet has been garnering international accolades for decades, under the direction of Alicia Alonso (see left).
And there's an active theater scene (and several movie theaters), both of which are popular with the locals since television provides few choices. The major venues for the classical performing arts are the Teatro Nacional de Cuba, which specializes in live theater performances by local and visitng companies; the Gran Teatro de La Habana, which is home to the Cuban National Ballet, as well as a prime venue for concerts and dance performances; and the Teatro Amadeo Roldan, which is home to the National Symphony Orchestra. Other important theaters include the Teatro mella, and Teatro Karl Marx.

The Conjunto Folklórico Nacional de Cuba (Cuban National Folklore Group) hosts the weekly Sabado de la Rumba, a mesmerizing show of Afro-Cuban religious and secular dance and drumming. The 2-hour shows are presented every Saturday at 3 p.m. An interesting fact about finding a way into a performance: Cuban women tend to hang out at the entrance, looking for unattached foreigners to pay their admission.
