Almost everyday after school, I participate in an internship program at a local elementary school, where I work with three and four year olds. The class consists of six boys. They partake in several activities throughout there three hour school day. Unfortunately, I am only at the internship for an hour of their day, but I have still learned a lot from that short time.
One of the major aspects of the class is how the room is set up. There are several different stations for the children to work at. These stations include a sandbox, the kitchen area, the toolbox, and circle. Each station acts to stimulate the children’s minds through play. For instance, the sand box offers the children a place to play while it acquaints them with different textures. The toolbox is a station where the children can hammer pegs or use take a closer look at familiar objects such as a saw or a screw driver.
Another large part of the class is the separate activities such as music and physical education. During music, the children are encouraged to sing along with the music teacher, as well as play instruments. The drums and the egg shaker are two of the instruments that the boys can play during music. The songs are simple repetitions so that the children can pick them up and sing along. Physical education is the most exciting parts of the week. In the gym, the kids can ride bikes, play with balls, and go “skating”. While there are several activities that the kids can participate in, their favorite thing to do in the gym is run back and forth from one end of the gym to the other.
While this internship is something that I hold very important for my future and extremely interesting, I have grown to love my “kids”, and I almost always walk away from the preschool with a smile on my face.
