The Trouble With eBay
EBay is cool in that you can make junk and throw it on auction for the entire computer-literate world to see. I like that part.
I don’t like the thief-part though.
You have an idea about doing shoe paintings. So you do some bizarre paintings of daisy flip-flops and skyscraper platforms and you throw them on. In a few weeks you will start to see other so-called artists, but they’re not, doing shoe paintings.
Or you can make a flock of strange-girl Barbie birddolls and they will get like 300 hits. That’s a lot of looking in one-week’s time considering how much crap is on eBay…millions and millions of items! And you will be pleased that all of those people looked and some actually bid and bought.
But, here we go again, replicas will start to surface. My dolls being done by the technical people. And although they make be more correct techniquely, well you stole my designs. I am an idea person. I can come up with five new dolls in ten minutes. They come fully in my head as an image. I have to jot them down or they evaporate when the next idea comes into my brain. So essentially you are trying to steal my brain. GET OFF ME!!!!!!!!
Take your sluggy brain elsewhere. It’s enough that I have to manage an empire without some neighboring warlord trying to take over my mansion. WATCH OUT! I am readying my catapult…BAM! One large boulder is heading your way. Don’t bother to duck. I am a steely-eyed sharpshooter.
P.S. Sometimes I catch myself stealing too. Mine goes more towards (oh man what is that word for stealing words? It starts wit a “p”, not pilfering, not promulgating, …well you know what it is) One day I was writing a story about a man being shrunken down and used as a dildo. Well, I was writing fast and laughing like crazy when all of a sudden I stopped cold. Dammit! I was rewriting a Bukowski story! So I know how easily [insert “p” word] can happen, BUT catch yourself and stop it.
