Here are some strategy suggestions for winning at Master of Orion:

1)  Grab planets like crazy.  Alien empires will waste resources building pointless fleets of scouts and medium-sized 2-shot missile ships early in the game.  Don't do that.  Try to grab a good planet early to aid your homeworld in the colonization process.  After you have 6 or 7 good planets (assuming a Huge galaxy), then start thinking about defenses/fleets.  But still look for good available planets.  Remember- even an ultra-poor planet can be used as a research center or a trooper factory.

2)  Populate those good planets from the homeworld (somewhere between 8-15 people each time).  Needless to say, your first 2 systems should be used for colonization along with your home planet.  They can't do that very well if they have a population of 2.  Once they are big, they can start making colony ships and sending populations of their own to these colonies.

3)  Ion Cannons are big.  By the time you have Duralloy Armor, some decent Battle Computer (not Mark I or II) and Nuclear Engines, it's time to mass-produce a fleet.  Ion Cannons will prove quite useful against those pathetic Lasers and Hyper-V Rockets.

4)  Relocation is even bigger.  If you have planets that are clearly outside of enemy range, relocate their ships over to border worlds.  Don't build up too much too fast though, which raises enemy suspicions about your (probably hostile) intentions.

5)  Spy on opponents.  It is vital to your war efforts to know the enemy's best Planetary Shields and engines.  Even though he will group fast and slow ships together, if all his ships are faster than yours, it might be over.  Also, use spies to destroy enemy missile bases before you attack a star system.  Here's a cool trick (it works better if you have a computer tech lead and he has a small empire):  Try to send half of his planets into revolt.  This forces an overthrow of the emperor in favor of a new leader who doesn't hate you as much.  Use the period of turmoil to your advantage.

6)  Do not ever reduce tech spending in any field to zero.  If you do, you will lose research points you have invested in whatever you are researching.

7)  Keep a well-balanced fleet ready to go at all times.  If you have a ship design that works especially well, build a second identical design so that your opponents focus on one to the exclusion of the other.

8)  Try to keep at least 1 friend.  Don't make enemies of everyone; you might need their votes in the High Council later.  Also you need a trading partner, but be wary of making new trade agreements before the old ones have actually begun to help you.

9)  Invest in the reserve from your industry.  Master of Orion does have an interesting stunt you can pull.  When a rich or ultra-rich planet is has constructed its maximum number of factories, keep some money flowing into the reserve.  This money will be doubled or tripled (depending on the mineral status of the planet) before being halved for corruption.  Then, when needed, invest that money back into the planets and it will double or triple again.

10) Don't take out Guardian without good security.  Everyone will want Death Ray, and remember that if you have it and reject a Council vote, they will get it and turn it against you.  Don't get in a position where being the only one with the Death Ray is the only thing keeping you alive.
