Tips for winning in Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares

1)  Get Hydroponic Farm, Reinforced Hull, Automated Factories, and Research Lab in that order.  As a general rule, this will get most empires off to the best start.  Some try to get the Lab earlier, but expansion is inhibited if you do not obtain the critical Automated Factory early.

2)  Just like in MOO1, don't worry about early computer fleets.  Many of these ships are a joke, and before 3515 there won't be much that could take on a well-defended planet.  By 3520 you want to have a Battleship, or be close to having one.  A couple cruisers plus this ship should be able to protect your empire for some time.

3)  5 or 6 systems is probably enough for awhile.  Assuming a huge galaxy, that is.  More is great, but get too big and the computer empires get suspicious.  Try to grab systems early, especially on both ends of wormholes.

4)  Build Housing.  This is usually a good idea, because there are so many Small Barren Poor planets out there, and once they have high populations they might be good for something.

5)  Don't attack a starbase too early.  Once you have 20 Command Points' worth of ships, you could give it a try, but hitting them too soon is not recommended.

6)  Stick with a good missile/beam combo until Graviton Beam.  The computer players really don't like this beam, and it is usually effective against them early because they stay with weak Class I shields too long.

7)  Don't be afraid to trade.  It is likely that the computer empires will get the technologies you possess eventually.  They don't know how to make good use of them, so do not be afraid to trade for their technologies.  Especially be willing to trade with the Psilons, because any lead you have on them will disappear very fast.  Also trade the Dimensional Portal for anything they offer since the computer cannot use it at all.

8)  Avoid the Stealth Fields.  They don't work and the simply take up space on your ships.

9)  Refit, don't scrap.  An Elite crew on a ship is a mighty advantage in the endgame.

10) Destroy Guardian as early as possible.  A big force of Battleships with Graviton Beam or a small force with Plasma Cannons will take out the Guardian, almost sealing your victory if done early enough.  Be sure you do not have 4 leaders at the time you attack, so that Commander Ruola doesn't take up Loknar's spot.
