   "MAMMOTH CAVE: When sailing on Echo River, in that cave, I dislodged from the rocky ceiling a small cup-coral, which Sherman examined in November, 1866, with no knowledge of it except what he might have obtained by seeing it.

   "It seems to be all dark: no, not quite dark. It is underground; and there is rock over my head. I have to stoop in places. I can see where light comes in. There is red rock by it. I can see the gleam of the water, and the circles made by fishes as they jump up. It is very, very still here, and all I can hear is these fish.
