Eugene von Bruenchenhein (1910-1983) lived a quiet life in Milwaukee with his lovely wife Marie. They lived in this house.
Although they never had much money and lived a small life, one without any frills, they had an intense life, one shared only by the two of them; some would call it a secret life.
You see Eugene took over 10,000 photographs of Marie. He adored her. He also made thrones out of chicken bones and he did flamboyantly color-rich paintings. He used sticks and twigs as brushes; lastly he favored Marie’s hair as the finest brushes of all.
It is the Marie pictures, found in a musty cellar, that bring me to tears. If an exhibit of his work is presented in your area, go. You will be richly rewarded.
