Use the one that best fits your playing style. For the owners of the foreign keyboards such as myself, some keys may be assigned too far from each other. If this happens, try using a different controller or assigning the action to a key around the controller in question.

Following is the miscellaneous actions ingame:

Let it begin!

Try playing the VS Mode first. You should see the character Selection screen, like the one below. Remember how to use this menu, because you will be using this in every game modes in LF2.

Hitting the Attack key should display the picture of the character inside the corresponding block (for example, when you hit NumPad 5, you should see your character in the top left block). Use your left and right keys to cycle the characters. You can confirm your character by hitting the Attack key. You will then choose your team. "Independent" means you are on your own, meaning you have to kill everybody else to win the game. Otherwise you will be in team 1-4. Players assigned in the same team cannot hurt each other, and will have to kill all the players who are not in your team to win.

When all the players have chosen their character and their team, you will move on to the countdown. During the countdown, if there is any unused controller present, a new player can choose to join the game before it ends. If not, you can tap the Jump key to skip the countdown.
When there is any player whose has not done choosing his/her character/team, you are able to press the Jump key to cancel your team/character to choose again. Do this if you have second thoughts about your decision. Also, a player may choose to remove him/herself from the game by canceling.

After the countdown, you will be choosing the number of the Computer players (AKA bots, if you prefer that word) that will join the game. You may choose not to have any bots unless there is only one player in the game, or if all the players are in the same team. Like you've done for the player characters, choose the character and the team for the bots.

Character Selection
In this game, you can see that the top column is team 1 and the down being team 2.
Only "Marti" is the human player.

Once all the character has been chosen, you will now see a little window that will decide the rules for the game.

When everyone is happy with the rules, hit "Fight!" to start playing!

Other Options...

Wondered what the other two choices were in the beginning? I mean, like the one below when you first ran the game?

Menu
Two unknown options. Mysterious.

"Network Game", needless to say, is what is generally known as "Multiplayer". You can play a synced game between two computers on the network, using the simple IP connection.

Clicking on Network Game will show a window like the one below. Waiting for Oppoenent (ignore the bad grammar, this game was made by a non-native English speaker...) will put you into "Now waiting...." until your opponent connects to you. By using "Connect to Opponent" you can type the waiting opponent's IP address to send the connection.

Connecting to each other is really simple; it's very similar to making a phone call. The player who chose to wait should tell his/her IP Address to the opponent, which is shown within the same screen for your ease. Then, using the IP Address the opponent told you, the connecting player types the IP Address in the box that has appeared and Click "Okay". Once the IP is correctly sent, and received by the opponent, you are connected! The game will start loading, and after that, enjoy your multiplayer game!

You may want to use a program like an Instant Messenger to communicate with your opponent, as LF2 does not support chatting feature. In fact, it is recommended. Strongly. Unless the opponent is your friend sitting just beside you.

Network Game
To connect, Click "Connect to Opponent" and type the correct IP address!
Make sure the IP is correct, including the periods.

On the other side of the story, we have "Control Settings" where you can confirm and reassign your controllers. Click on the picture of the keyboard to use a different device (Joypad for example). To reassign keys, click on the key block you wish to change, and press the key you wish to assign that action to.
You can also change your "player name" that appears below your character here. To do that, click on the small column above the picture of the keyboard where it has the numbers 1 to 4. Backspace to erase that name and type your new name here. The names can be as long as 10 characters maximum, but a name with too many characters may be annoying while playing. Make sure you keep the name no longer than 4 characters.

Control Settings
Don't mess it up or the gameplay will be messed up as well.

Make sure to Click "OK!" to save your settings. The settings will be saved within "data\control.txt" inside the LF2 directory.
