BV took their lumps Saturday afternoon, and part of the reason was their 23 yards rushing on the day. One of the bright spots for the Beavers was receiver Josh Espinosa, who hauled in 9 passes for 156 yards. Chris Lovely was responsible for 3 touchdowns, Ryan Hanes had 2 picks, and Matt Ditch had 102 yards receiving in Cornell's 41-14 triumph over Colorado College. Upper Iowa allowed 308 yards rushing to Nebraska Wesleyan, and when you are allowing over 5 and a half yards per carry, it is very hard to win a football game. That is what happened to the Peacocks as they were downed 25-7. Loras' Jeremy Brown was a one man wrecking crew as he had 25 rushes for 189 yards and four scores to help lead the Duhawks over Monmouth. In doing so, Brown was named Player of the Week in the IIAC. Brad Hodapp and Justin Beatty combined for 199 yards rushing and Jake Olsen threw for 218 yards and two scores to Chris Winter as Wartburg came back from a 20-3 deficit to beat UW-Oshkosh 24-20. Simpson's Jesse Von Behren had 7 catches for 75 yards, but didn't play the second half due to an injury. What hurt worse though was he and the rest of the team had to watch the Bears go 99 yards on their last drive, which led to the game winning field goal to give the Storm a loss.

The Iowa Conference finished its '02 non-conference campaign this Saturday with an overall record of 6-4. Three of four IIAC teams earned victory this weekend. The one that didn't was Central, as they were taken care of by Augie 34-14. Nine turnovers did the Dutch in, including 5 fumbles. The lone bright spot for Central was Tony Rietema, who had 5 catches for 124 yards and both Dutch scores. Anthony Coward scored twice, Jason Happach did as well and added 129 yards on the ground, and Walter Krause passed for 220 yards as Dubuque took care of Martin Luther 36-24 Saturday afternoon. Mike Jefferson ran for 125 yards and a touchdown to help Luther double up Minnesota-Morris 40-20. 2001 IIAC MVP Fredrick Jackson ran wild at McKinzie Field, amassing 243 yards and 3 scores on 18 carries, as the Kohawks destroyed Eureka 50-0. Matt Wycoff added 103 yards and a score as Coe outrushed the Red Devils 500 to -9. Jackson was named IIAC Player of the Week for his efforts.

Austin Bonnema's blocked punt shifted momentum in favor of the Dutch, as they shut out Loras the last three quarters to post a 17-7 win despite being outgained by the Duhawks on the day. Joe Brannen threw for 303 yards and four touchdowns, and FB Matt Wycoff rushed for 113 yards as Coe defeated Upper Iowa 28-6. Coe had over 500 yards of offense on the day, but did lose '01 MVP Fredrick Jackson. Jesse Montalto had 90 yards receiving and a score for UIU. Luther held the University of Dubuque to 22 yards of total offense and Derek Distin threw 3 touchdown passes as the Norse took care of UD 38-10. Mike Donnenwerth threw for 279 yards, 136 of them to Jesse Von Behren, and Greg Dreyer scored twice as Simpson escaped with a 20-17 win over BV for the second straight year. Josh Espinosa had 8 catches for 190 yards for the Beavers, and was named player of the week despite the loss. After getting back into the game with a Matt Ditch touchdown reception, Cody Kelley took things into his own hands to give Wartburg a 31-14 win over Cornell. Up 17-14, Kelley scooped up a blocked punt for a score, and for good measure, took an interception 94 yards to paydirt with 6:23 to put away the Rams. Brad Hodapp had 177 yards and a score for the Knights as well. Ditch had 8 catches and 186 yards with 2 scores, and Eric Sudol had 16 stops and an interception for Cornell.

Apparently an injury means something else in Cedar Rapids, because Fred Jackson found paydirt five times in their homecoming victory of the Storm. Overall, he had 199 yards on 32 carries and #5 was named player of the week for the second time in 3 weeks. Matt Wycoff added 82 yards and a score as well. Mike Donnenwerth was one of the lone bright spots for Simpson, as he threw for 161 yards and two scores. Jesse Von Behren had 67 yards receiving and a score. Subbing for an injured Chris Lovely, Adam Hadenfeldt was responsible for 4 Cornell scores as the Rams were able to get by Buena Vista. Hadenfelt had 325 yards of total offense (224 pass, 111 rush) in the victory. Chet Knake had 17 tackles and a sack to lead the Ram 'D'. Barry VanVoorst had 128 yards rushing and 2 scores for BV. After a scoreless first half, Loras blew the game open scoring four times in the third quarter to help close out Dubuque 34-0. Dee Hill had 145 yards rushing and a TD, and Jeremy Brown added 122 and a score to pace the Duhawks. Prince Bussie had 21 tackles for the Spartans on the day, who were outgained 400-104. Luther is a much-improved ballclub under new head coach Paul Hefty, but Wartburg thought it was time to show the Norse that they still need some breaks to beat some of the frontrunners in the IIAC with a 41-0 romp Saturday afternoon. Jake Olsen was 19/26 for 270 yards and three scores, Chris Winter hauled in 8 passes for 158 yards and 2 TD's, and Brad Hodapp ran for 92 yards and two scores as the Knights outgained Luther 527-98 on the day. The week of dominating performances was culminated by Central's 50-0 whitewashing of Upper Iowa. 6 Dutch players found the endzone, led by Tony Rietema's 2 touchdown catches. Central outgained the Peacocks 419-55 and held UIU to -2 yards on the ground.

Luther seemed to be feeling the effects from last week's defeat against their rivals Wartburg this Saturday, as their offense sputtered again against Buena Vista. Josh Espinosa led the Beavers with 10 catches for 167 yards and two scores in the 19-9 win. Brian Sparby picked off two passes, had a sack, and ten tackles on the day for the Norse. Antone Lopez had 139 yards rushing and three touchdowns as the Upper Iowa Peacocks got their first conference win on Saturday with a 22-12 win over Dubuque. Mike Haun kicked a season-best 46 yard field goal in the loss. Down 26-24, Jesse Von Behren hauled in two of his three touchdown catches in the fourth quarter to help Simpson defeat Cornell 38-26. Von Behren had 7 catches for 175, and was named IIAC player of the week for his efforts. QB Mike Donnenwerth was 13 for 18 for 250 yards and three scores. Simpson led 24-6 until Cornell scored three times to take the lead, which prompted the comeback. I think we now know that Wartburg is pretty darn good. They handled Loras Saturday 34-3. The Knights averaged 7 yards per play and were led by Brad Hodapp, who gained 185 yards on 21 carries, finding the endzone once as well. Jake Olsen was 13 for 19 with 157 yards and a score and JJ Zearley was a force on the defensive side on the ball with 5 of the 9 Knight sacks on the afternoon. Talk about deja-vu, Coe did it again. Up 20-0, the Kohawks watched the Dutch score 21 unanswered points in the game's final thirteen minutes to send Coe home on the short side of a 21-20 count. Joey Liekweg rushed for 93 yards, and Tony Rietema had 84 yards receiving to lead the Dutch. Mark Sanger added 15 tackles and a big interception on the other side of the ball for Central. Fred Jackson had 129 yards on 35 carries, one rushing score, and one receiving for Coe. Jon Rife also had a TD reception to go along with his game-high 86 yards receiving. Fred's brother Patrick led the Coe 'D' with 15 tackles.

The first half of the season is now upon us, and Wartburg, Central, and Coe are up top. With the Knights still having to play both the Kohawks and the Dutch (in the next two weeks actually), things can still be shaken up in the Iowa Conference. Fred Jackson rushed for 197 yards and found the endzone five times as Coe rolled past Dubuque 48-0 in Cedar Rapids. Joe Brannen was 10/14 for 185 yards and a score as well. The Kohawks amassed 547 yards on the day. Prince Bussie had 14 tackles, and Nate McCullough had 11 stops, a sack, and a fumble recovery to lead the Spartans, who are still looking for their first IIAC win. Jeremy Brown erupted for 232 yards rushing and two touchdowns, as he helped Loras defeat Buena Vista 35-19. Dee Hill added 89 yards on just 11 carries and a score. Ben Burbach led all receivers with 91 yards and a score. Josh Espinosa had 203 all-purpose yards, and Barry VanVoorst had 2 rushing touchdowns for BV. Brown was named IIAC player of the week for his career high rushing game. Jesse Woskowicz scored his third rushing touchdown of the day with :40 to go to help lead Cornell win against Luther 33-28. Woskowicz had 151 yards on 12 carries, and Matt Ditch had 10 catches for 144 yards to lead the way offensively. Chet Knake had 15 tackles, a sack, and an interception to lead the Ram defense. Mike Jefferson led Luther with 188 yards and two touchdown runs of his own. The two teams combined for 905 yards on the afternoon. Central used another big fourth quarter to put away their rivals in Simpson College 21-7. Tyler Baethke had 135 yards and a score on the ground for the victors, and backfield running mate Joey Liekweg rushed for a score also. Tim Vande Noord had 3 sacks to lead Central's defense. Jesse Von Behren had 88 yards receiving, and John Soenen ran for Simpson's only score of the ballgame. The Victory Bell stays in the hands of Wartburg College, at least for another year, as they took care of Upper Iowa 42-7. Five different Knights found the endzone. Brad Hodapp had 155 yards rushing to lead Wartburg, but didn't make it past the goal line, that was done twice by Jake Flanders. Flanders ended the day with 88 yards on the ground. Jake Olsen had a good performance, completing 13 of 19 passes for 183 yards and three scores. Cody Kelly had two interceptions on the day, taking one back 32 yards for a touchdown. Upper Iowa's only score was Jimmie McCray's 36 yard fumble return midway through the third. Jon Scranton had 17 tackles for the Peacocks.

Buena Vista overcame a 13-10 deficit and scored 28 unanswered points to beat Upper Iowa. Barry VanVoorst led the Beavers on the ground as he chewed up 121 yards on 27 carries and found the endzone twice. All-purpose Josh Espinosa had another 100 yards on the day, including 59 yards receiving for two scores. Jesse Montalto led the Peacocks with 10 receptions for 185 yards. The Dutch rolled into Dubuque and shutout the Spartans 37-0. Central's "Two Headed Monster" Tyler Baethke and Joey Liekweg combined for 193 yards and three scores. Tight End Tony Rietema was Central's big target through the air once again, catching 8 passes for 140 yards. Kade Davison led UD with 67 yards receiving and Prince Bussie continued to rack up the tackles, adding 14 more and an INT. Mike Donnenwerth threw for 291 yards and four scores, 3 to Jesse Von Behren, as Simpson stormed away from Luther 38-14. #15, who also averaged 40 yards per punt, was named player of the Week in the IIAC. Clint Willuweit led the Norse with 113 yards on the ground. Ashley Johnson had 67 yards receiving and a score for Luther as well. Three straight strikes between Ben Burbach and Adam Hamil spelled doom for Cornell, as Loras left Mt. Vernon with a 42-23 victory. Hamil finished with 177 yards passing and four TDs while Ben Burbach had 5 catches for 106, and the three scores. Jeremy Brown added 108 yards on the ground and a touchdown for the victors. Matt Ditch tried his best for the Rams, catching 9 balls for 102 yards and a score, and punting the ball 4 times for a 49 yard average. IIAC tackle leader Chet Knake had 15 stops, 1 sack, and took back a two point conversion for a score for Cornell as well. Turnovers were the name of the game as the Rams outgained the Duhawks, but had four turnovers. 2 blocked punts, a blocked field goal and a blocked extra point would hurt any team's chances of winning. The #13 team in the country ALMOST got through it, but was beaten by Coe 21-13. Coe's all-everything man Fred Jackson took the opening kickoff 92 yards for a score, and forced the Knights to play catch-up right away. Brant Pfantz blocked both punts, and Fred's brother Pat blocked the PAT. I did get one thing right though, Brad Hodapp won the rushing battle against the conference-leading Jackson 129-97. Hodapp had both scores for Wartburg, and Vince King had 14 tackles and 6 TFL's to lead the defense.

BV led Coe 2-0 with just over 14 minutes to go in the half, but at the end of the day Fred Jackson found the zone three times and the Kohawks came away with a 40-5 whitewashing. Jackson had 120 yards on 26 carries (1039 yards on the year), Joe Brannen threw for 227 yards and 2 scores, and Scott Searcy had 10 tackles and three sacks to lead Coe. Eric Wiebers was 16-for-29 for 181 yards, but was intercepted three times for the Beavers. Coe averaged six and a half yards per play, and now are looking at the IIAC's automatic bid due to Wartburg's win over Central. Two fourth quarter touchdowns receptions by Jesse Montalto put the game into overtime, and Antone Lopez finished things off in the second OT to lift Upper Iowa to a 35-28 win over Cornell. Lopez ran for two scores, and Javon Bailey added 96 yards and a score for the Peacocks. Rusty Yansky had two rushing touchdowns, Matt Ditch had a receiving score and Chet Knake led the Ram defense with 18 tackles. Josh Thomas had 2 picks for UIU. Luther held Loras' rushing attack to 45 yards on 35 carries, and posted a 23-13 upset win over the Duhawks. Mike Jefferson and Clint Willuweit combined for 156 yards and 2 scores to lead the Norse. Nick Brown had the Duhawks' only offensive score with just :21 remaining. Travis Sullivan had 19 stops, and Justin Herman added two INTs for Loras. Mike Donnenwerth threw for 297 yards and three scores, and added another on a 32 yard scamper to lead Simpson over Dubuque 35-6. Kyle Peterson led all receivers with 162 yards and two scores on just 4 catches. Jesse Von Behren added one through the air as well for the Storm. Jason Happach had 74 yards on the ground, and Kade Davison had 69 yards receiving for UD. In a classic defensive struggle, Wartburg went to Pella and defeated the Dutch 14-0. Jake Olsen found Jeff Marsh at the end of the third quarter to put the first points on the scoreboard. Brian McIntire finished the scoring when he took a Mark Issacson pass back 96 yards to seal the deal for the Knights. Vince King stole the show on 'D' with 11 tackles, 3.5 TFL's, and 2 sacks. King was the first defensive player to be named Player of the Week in the IIAC. Tony Rietema led the Central offense with 5 catches and 48 yards, and Mark Sanger added 12 stops and an interception to lead the Dutch defense. Justin Beatty had 92 yards rushing, and was the only offensive player to put up big numbers in the big game. The big winner was once again Coe, as the Kohawks would be IIAC champs under the Rose Bowl Theory if all three teams win out from here.

Two Matt Brandt touchdowns in the fourth quarter helped the Dutch come out of Storm Lake with a 'W' 28-14. Mark Issacson added two passing touchdowns, including one to TE Tony Rietema. Josh Espinosa hauled in 5 catches for 51 yards and a score and Michael Irvin had 17 tackles for the Beavers. Coe used a couple fourth quarter scores by Freddie Jackson to pull away from their rivals on Saturday 35-19. All told, Jackson had 213 yards and three scores on the day. The Kohawks' other scores were touchdown receptions by Matt Wycoff, who had 88 yards receiving. Chris Lovely connected with Matt Ditch for two receiving scores for the Rams, and IIAC tackle leader Chet Knake added 15 more stops and found the endzone playing a little offense as well. Coe/Cornell is the longest current running rivalry west of the Mississippi River. Wartburg used a 27 point outburst in the second quarter to close out Dubuque 40-7. Justin Beatty ran for 119 yards, but Brad Hodapp was the one finding paydirt, twice on rushes and once on a punt return for a score. Jake Olsen was 6-for-8 with 202 yards and a score to lead the quarterbacks. Chad Ingram returned a fumble 58 yards for the Spartans only score, and Freshman Prince Bussie had 12 tackles. Luther shut out Upper Iowa 19-0 in the second half to break a 14-14 deadlock, giving the Norse a 33-14 win. Mike Jefferson and Seth Wigle both ran for 95 yards, with Wigle scoring twice on only 9 carries to lead Luther. Aaron Fredette threw for 161 yards and two scores to pace the Peacocks. Jesse Montalto had 6 catches for 131 of those yards and a score. Byron Hook had the most tackles in the game, tallying 14 for UIU. Finally, you can usually count on the Iowa Conference to produce traditional football scores, but at Bill Buxton Stadium in Indianola tradition was thrown out the window as the scoreboard read 69-48 Storm when the triple zeros hit. IIAC Player of the Week Jesse Von Behren led the Storm with 8 grabs for 163 yards and a touch, and also scored on a 60 yard run in the second quarter. Mike Donnenwerth had a great day as well, completing 21 of 27 passes for 310 yards and three scores. Jesse Stewart added 136 yards rushing and three scores for Simpson, who scored 42 points in the second half, including a fumble recovery in the endzone by Nolan Carson and a blocked punt return for a score by Brad Gibson. Jeremy Brown led Loras with 139 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. QB Adam Hamil threw for 237 yards and three scores, but was intercepted twice, and Nick Brown had 7 catches for 157 yards and two TD's. Brothers Ben and Andy Burbach each had a touchdown reception as well, and finished with 96 and 76 yards respectively. Defense was at a minimum, as both teams combined for 1158 yards, but Loras' Joseph Roudez did have a dozen tackles on the afternoon. The three teams looking for the automatic berth remain unscathed after the first Saturday in November, so we will have to wait at least another week until someone, if anyone, makes things more clear up top.

Three Matt Brandt touchdown runs in the first half helped the Dutch turn away Cornell 48-0. Brandt would end the day with 63 yards on the ground, the real ground gainer was Tyler Baethke, who had 122 yards and a score of his own. TE Tony Rietema had 5 catches for 83 yards and a score for Central, who still need some help if they want the IIAC's automatic bid to the playoffs. Chet Knake had 15 more tackles for the Rams, who were outgained 414-134 on the day. The 24th ranked team in the country had quite a struggle on their hands early, as Luther jumped to a 10-0 lead. The Kohawks then kept the Norse scoreless for the rest of the contest, and found the endzone 3 times to take a 21-10 win. Fred Jackson had 153 yards on the ground, but did not find the endzone rushing. He returned a punt 72 yards in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring. Joe Brannen added 173 yards of total offense for Coe. Ashley Johnson led Luther with 5 receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown, and John Jaeger led the Norse defense with 15 stops of his own. Coe will be rooting for Wartburg this weekend, as a Kohawk win, combined with a Knight win, will send Coe to the playoffs for the first time as members of the Iowa Conference. Buena Vista survived a late comeback to defeat Dubuque 28-20, due much in part to the efforts of Eric Wiebers. Wiebers was 30 of 51 for 431 yards and four scores, including 3 successive strikes to Josh Espinosa, who hauled in 8 catches for 141 yards. UD was led by Freshman Luke Rosenbrook, who rushed for 96 yards and a score. Daunta Peterson and Kade Davison had receiving scores for Dubuque. Ryan Neiss' 33 yard field goal with 3:34 remaining proved to be the game winner as Loras held off Upper Iowa 17-14. Jeremy Brown had 98 yards rushing for the Duhawks, Ben Burbach had a touchdown reception, and Adam Hamil ran for a score in addition to his TD pass for Loras. Aaron Fredette was 21 for 36 for 238 yards to lead the Peacocks, while Jesse Montalto had 7 of those receptions for 75 yards and a score, and Kyle Hite added another 83 yards receiving for UIU. Wartburg broke open a 14-14 deadlock with three scores to put away a pesky Simpson squad 33-17. Brad Hodapp had 124 yards rushing and three scores, and teammate Justin Beatty had 170 yards and a score to lead the Knights. Jeff Marsh added 7 grabs for 80 yards and a score for the #22 team in the country. Wartburg's defense was able to keep Storm QB Mike Donnenwerth without a touchdown pass, but Donnenwerth was able to throw for 233 yards on the day, including 84 to Jesse Von Behren. Randal Schultz led all defensive players with 16 stops for Simpson. Brad Gibson added 10 tackles, and took an interception 36 yards to the house. In addition to needing a win next Saturday, Wartburg needs Loras to beat Coe to take the IIAC's automatic bid. The Knights do though have what seems to be the best opportunity for a Pool C bid out of the three teams.

The last week of the regular season may not have produced interesting football games, but it did produce some very favorable results for the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference as a whole. Both Coe and Wartburg have extended their season to at least one more game, and both will play at home this weekend.

Central used a third quarter outburst to put away Luther 33-3. Tyler Baethke had 142 yards rushing and a score, Mark Issacson threw for 246 yards and two scores, one apiece to Tony Rietema and Trent Cooper to lead the Dutch. Zach Wigle had 14 stops and an interception for Luther. Despite the win, Central ended up being the odd man out as far as the playoffs went. The two teams that have had the most playoff appearances (Central and Augustana) will both be sitting things out in '02. Cornell started off strong and was able to keep Dubuque from winning its only conference game with a 50-13 score. Matt Ditch led the Rams with 8 grabs for 151 yards and two scores. Chris Lovely was 9 for 12 with 2 scores, and Adam Hadenfeldt added two passing strikes as well. Chet Knake had 18 tackles and a sack to close out a heckuva year for him. Jason Happach had 95 yards rushing in his final game, while Will Hewlett threw for 179 yards, 89 of them to Daunta Peterson. Chad Ingram led the Spartan defense with two interceptions on the day. The Simpson Storm was in control, up 31-7 at the half, until Upper Iowa decided to make a game of it. The Peacocks would come out on the short end of a 45-32 count though. Mike Donnenwerth only completed 13 passes, but 5 went the distance for Simpson. Donnenwerth was named player of the week, on top of becoming Simpson's all-time season leader in passing yards and touchdowns. Jesse Von Behren closed out the year taking three of those passes to the house, and having another 100 yard receiving performance, with 110. Kyle Westphal had a whale of a game on defense, garnering 14 tackles, an interception, and 5 passes defended. UIU was led by Javon Bailey, who had 154 yards rushing and a score. Jesse Montalto had 7 catches for 91 yards and a score as well for the Peacocks. Coe built a commanding 28-6 lead going into the locker room, but Loras mounted a comeback of their own, but falling short to the #20 Kohawks 28-20. Jon Rife led Coe with 7 catches for 126 yards and a score. Fred Jackson, in limited action after re-aggravating a shoulder injury, had 65 yards rushing and a score to sew up top rusher and most likely top player in the IIAC yet again. Matt Wycoff had 2 rushing scores to pick up the slack. Joe Brannen threw for 234 yards for Coe, who play UW-La Crosse this Saturday in the first round of the playoffs due in part to receiving the IIAC's automatic bid. Adam Hamil threw for 242 yards and two scores, and also ran for a score to lead Loras. The Burbach brothers combined for 139 yards receiving and one score for the Duhawks as well. Mike Frels had a great effort on 'D' for the Duhawks, tallying 10 tackles, 5 for loss, 2.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. Finally, a rushing clinic by #19 Wartburg proved too tough to tame, as they demolished Buena Vista 58-3. Brad Hodapp had 16 carries for 172 yards and three touchdowns, and running mate Justin Beatty had 23 runs for 164 yards and three scores. Jeff Marsh added 99 yards receiving for the Knights, who received 1 of the 3 Pool C bids, and will host Casey Urlacher and Midwest Conference Champ Lake Forest this weekend. Josh Espinosa was held in check, catching four passes for just 31 yards. Wartburg outgained BV on the day 586-97, averaging 7.7 yards per play.
