Woodstock Renegades extinguish the Firebirds

The Woodstock Renegades tightened their grip on third place Friday with an emphatic 6-2 win over the New Hamburg Firebirds.

While trailing early, the 'Gades found their stride midway through the opening period, scoring four goals in six minutes to take control of the game. While Travis Horvath notched the official game winner about 14 minutes into the frame, and assisted on Tayler Jones' opening goal, the offensive stars of the game were Jordan Minello and Brandon Zimmerman. Minello scored twice and assisted on two others while Zimmerman had a four-point night that was capped by a third-period goal. Cole Maher rounded out the Woodstock scoring with a power- play goal at the end of the first.

While the Renegades offence was clicking, the team was bolstered by another solid outing by all-star goalie Alex Gegeny, who turned aside 23 shots for his ninth win of the season.

Except for that first goal by Tom Carruthers, the Firebirds were never really in the game. The Renegades outshot their rivals by a three-to-one margin in that key first period and never really let the Firebirds get back into the game. While James Harrison knocked in a Carruthers' pass midway through the third period, New Hamburg was already in much too deep a hole.

With the win, the Renegades improved to a 14-11-4 season record and now has a five-point lead over New Hamburg in the race for third place in the Niagara League's west division. Woodstock's next game is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 15, when the team hosts the last-place Paris Mounties.
