Renegades hope Family Night will pack the 'Plex tonight
The Woodstock Renegades are hoping to pack the 'Plex tonight.
With draws, fundraisers and a feting of the city's two International Silver Stick winners all planned, the Renegades' annual Family Night will be busier than usual.
Game time is 7:30 p.m. and 50% of admission will be donated to a fund supporting injured linesman Kevin Brown, who continues to recover in a London hospital after his carotid artery was severed while officiating in Woodstock Dec. 29.
The Woodstock Minor Hockey Association will be front and centre throughout the night. Draws for various prizes will take place and the 50/50 proceeds will be donated to the WMHA.
The Renegades will also honour the minor atom and minor midget Jr. Navy Vets teams that won the International Silver Stick last weekend. All minor hockey players are encouraged to wear their jerseys to the game.
Shawn Crawford will be running a food drive on behalf of Woodstock minor hockey with non-perishable food items and/or cash going to the Salvation Army.
The off-ice festivities can't distract the Gades from their on-ice responsibilities. Woodstock can clinch third place with a win over the Aylmer Spitfires.
Woodstock (16-12-4) is six points ahead of New Hamburg with four games remaining and own the head-to- head tiebreaker against the Firebirds.
The Renegades have won four straight (not including last Sunday's 5-4 loss that was a continuation of their Dec. 29 game) and finish the regular season with a relatively easy schedule against the Niagara west division's bottom feeders, Aylmer and Paris.
With Simcoe one win away from clinching first place over the Norwich Merchants, the battle for fifth and sixth place is the most heated in the division.
The rebuilding Spitfires have 23 points, two more than Paris, with four games remaining for each team. Aylmer will finish its regular season schedule against Woodstock, with games against Norwich and New Hamburg sandwiched between tonight's clash.
Paris, meanwhile, travels to New Hamburg tonight and plays a home-and- home against Woodstock before ending the season at home against Simcoe.
In Norwich, the Merchants host the Storm tonight at 8 p.m. in what is a must-win in order to have a shot at finishing atop the division.
If the Merchants finish second, they will still likely take a first-round bye in the playoffs, but will forfeit home-ice advantage should they meet the Storm in the playoffs.
