Renegades win series, move on to Norwich

The Renegades will face the Norwich Merchants in the Niagara and District Jr. C west division semifinals.

The Renegades reached the semis after taking the quarterfinal series against the New Hamburg Firebirds in five games with a 4-2 win at the Southwood Arena Saturday night. The Aylmer Spitfires won a 3-1 game against the Paris Mounties in Aylmer to also win that series in five games, meaning Woodstock will face Norwich and Aylmer will see the Simcoe Storm.

Woodstock's Cole Maher netted two goals for the Renegades on the power-play, one each in the first and third periods. The team's other scoring came from Craig Thomson and Taylor Jones.

New Hamburg's two goals both came on the power-play, as first Craig Germann assisted on Colin Eby's goal in the first and then Eby on Germann's goal in the second.

Woodstock goaltender Chris Lee left the game at the end of the first period after taking a flying elbow to the helmet— Alex Gegeny stepped between the pipes at the start of the second and went on to stop 20 shots. Shots overall were 34-30 for Woodstock.

Penalties played a part in the game, with the Firebirds racking up 28 minutes in the box to Woodstock's 12.
