RENEGADES ROOKIE CAMP

Friday, August 07th, 2009

Renegades rookie camp begins Aug. 17

With the Navy Vets campaign in full swing, the Woodstock Renegades are preparing for possibly their third and final season.

Rookie camp is scheduled to begin Aug. 17 and team owner Bill McLeod is looking to see some local players step up and make the jump to main camp and, perhaps, a permanent spot on the roster.

"We're really looking for some local kids, as many as I can get," he said. "I'd rather finish second or third with local kids than win it with imports. I don't think we have any imports signed."

McLeod said the team has signed around 10 players so far, including last year's leading scorer Cole Maher and 2007-08 leading scorer Mike Brilhante, who spent last season in Tavistock.

Other returnees include forwards Craig Thomson, Tyler Labadie, Travis Horvath and Brandon Zimmermann and goalie Alex Gegeny.

"We have some exciting new guys who hopefully can be the next Thomson, Labadie and Horvath," McLeod said of last year's rookie crop.

One new addition includes winger Luigi Martone, who finished last season with the Junior A Dixie Beehives and recently moved to Woodstock from Toronto.

"He's fantastic," McLeod said. "He'll fit in nicely with Cole and Mike and those guys.

"Our problem (last year) was scoring on the power play and moral a bit, I guess. I don't think we'll have problem on the power play."

Two players who won't be back are starting goalie Chris Lee and defenceman Anthony Dolcetti. The pair recently joined the Simcoe Storm.

"I love the way this team's going," McLeod said. "I'm excited for this year already."

The team will play its first exhibition game against Burford Aug. 26 during the Bring Back the Navy Vets campaign, but the remainder of the pre-season schedule is unclear. There could be more exhibition games or the Shoot-Out at the Plex.

McLeod said teams will know by Friday whether or not the annual tournament returns Sept. 11-13. They are looking for six to eight teams.

"I don't know if we have time for that," he said. "It takes a lot of volunteers and a lot of time. We just want to pick our team and it might be better if someone outside took over."
