Weekend losses for Renegades
The Woodstock Renegades continued their recent slide with tough weekend losses against the division-leading Simcoe Storm and the New Hamburg Firebirds.
The Renegades attempted a late-game comeback against the Storm in Sunday's game, coming within a goal with only 13 minutes left to play, but Simcoe responded with three straight goals to earn the 8-5 win.
Corey Bethune scored the game-winner for the Storm -- the middle goal in that momentum-killing trio -- and eventually notched his hat trick with an empty-netter. Zane Neily Jr. and Kirk Stevenson supplied the rest of Simcoe's third-period goals while Derek Long (pp), Jordan Paton (sh), Bethune and Colton Thornton rounded out the scoring.
Cole Maher opened the scoring for the Renegades, notching a power-play goal early in the first, while Travis Horvath, Christian Babb, Jordan Minello and Mike Brilhante netted the remaining Woodstock goals.
The Renegades opened their weekend with their second one-goal loss to the New Hamburg Firebirds in as many weeks. While Woodstock kept things close in Friday's 4-3 loss, the Firebirds never relinquished their lead after Chris Chapman opened the scoring with an early power-play goal.
Chapman and Don Macpherson added two more power-play goals in the second period while Damien Parent netted the eventual game-winner early in the third. Craig Thomson (pp), Maher and Brilhante (pp) supplied the Woodstock scoring in the loss.
With the two losses, third-place Woodstock now sits 11 points behind the Merchants in the west division standings.
Woodstock's next game is scheduled at home against the Chippawa Riverhawks.
