The next morning, Sabrina opened her eyes and blinked as the sun shone on her
face. Josh looked so peaceful in his sleep; she was careful not to wake him
as she got ready for class. Sleeping next to Josh gave her a lot of comfort,
though she knew it would seem odd to others that they’d never had sex
after dating for so long.
Josh was up and fixing his breakfast when Sabrina had showered and dressed. They kissed good morning. Josh handed her a place with a fresh omelet. “So, how often am I going to see you this week?” “I was just thinking about that. David wants me in the studio 24/7 and what free time I have I’d like to spend with my family, especially since we’re going to that cabin for the whole weekend. What do you think?” Sabrina agreed, kissed him and left for class.
Sabrina was about to enter her art history class, when she noticed a flier someone posted to start a study group. It would start today in the library this afternoon. She signed her name and entered the room.
When her classes were over, Sabrina went to the library for the study group. She looked around and suddenly locked eyes with the most attractive man she’d ever seen. It was her Gap boy from the park! “Are you Sabrina?” he asked. She nodded as he extended his hand. “Nice to meet you, I’m Leo. You’re the only person who signed up, so it’s just us.” His voice was deep and smooth. Sabrina supposed he’d be a baritone if he were a singer. He wore a t-shirt with a flannel shirt over it and a nice pair of jeans. His physique was jus as perfect as she remembered. As they talked and reviewed the material, Sabrina was impressed with his intelligence and appreciation for art. Leo was a double major in Art and Architecture. He’d had to leave school for a few years to help take care of his ailing father, but would graduate this spring at the age of 25.
Sabrina’s phone rang suddenly. “Sorry.” She murmured and answered. “Hello?” “Hey Bri, how are you?” “CJ! I’m sorry, but I’ll have to call you back later, OK?” “All right. You’ll explain later.” She laughed. “Of course I will. I love you.” ‘Love you too.” Sabrina smiled as she put her phone away. “Your boyfriend?” “No CJ’s been my best friend for six years.” Leo smiled, and made Sabrina melt. She couldn’t understand why she felt so giddy, nor why she neglected to mention Josh.
When she got back home, Sabrina called CJ back. “Hey, I was wondering if I’d hear from you tonight.” “I know it’s late CJ, sorry. I lost track of time.” “That’s all right. I only wanted to tell you that Chelsea and I are getting married.” Sabrina’s smile was a mile wide. “Congratulations! I thought you were going to ask her next week for her birthday.” “Couldn’t wait that long. The date’s been set for October. Bri, I want you to be my best man, or I guess best woman.” “Really?” “You’re my best friend. I’m marrying Chelsea, but I’m going to spend the rest of my life with you.” It wasn’t like CJ to get so sentimental, and it touched her deeply. Tears sprang to her eyes. “I’d be honored to be part of your wedding.” “You’re crying, aren’t you?” She laughed. “I’m so sorry I couldn’t talk earlier.” She told him about Leo and their study group. “Does Josh have anything to worry about?” “I just met him, but he’s handsome as the devil as my grandmother would say.” “Has Josh started recording the new CD yet?” “Yeah. He won’t let me come to the studio, he’s very self conscious about the recording process. But he promised to let me sit in when he does ‘In Your Eyes’.” “Good. He knows how much that means to you. Hold on.” She could hear him say something briefly to Chelsea. “Bri, I gotta go. We’re driving to Chelsea’s parents house to tell him they news.” “Now? But it’s after midnight your time.” “If we leave now, we’ll be there by 8am. No sweat.” “Drive carefully. Give Chelsea my love.”
As Sabrina hung up the phone, she thought briefly of calling Josh. She decided against it, looking at the amount of homework she had. She also wanted to read ahead a few chapters in her art history book and be ready to discuss them with Leo. She’d call Josh tomorrow night. He’s probably tired from the day anyway.
Across town, Leo sat in his apartment and tried to concentrate on his homework
instead of Sabrina. Decided he needed a snack, he grabbed an apple and peeled
the skin in one long curl, as his grandmother taught him. Sabrina’s hair
was long and wavy and begged him to play with it. He loved the way she ran her
fingers through it when she was concentrating. Leo cursed himself silently as
he finished the apple and threw the core in the trash. He forced himself to
concentrate on the biography and works of his namesake, Da Vinci, until he finally
fell asleep over his books, but it was Sabrina who haunted his dreams.
