Olivia Goes Home
Liv and I won’t be friends for long. It has nothing to do with her performance during the 5 days. It has to do with who she will become. She will be waisthigh and she will weigh 120 to 160 pounds.
I am terrified of big dogs.
When I was 15, I was off to go tobogganing when my pal ran out of gas. We walked a short distance to a house just off the highway. His pal from school lived there. As we walked up to the door a German Shepard came up behind me, completely silent. The dog had one paw on my left shoulder, the other paw down on my right forearm, and his teeth stuck into my right bicep. I screamed and the dad came out…fast. The dog’s fangs went through all of the layers of clothing I had on.
So when Olivia gets big I will ask the owner if he can put her away when I visit. Maybe she could be in the fenced yard when I am in the house, or we could switch. Otherwise it will be me who is the one glued into the corner, trembling, with my tail tucked between my legs. She will make me uncomfortable, hypervigilant, especially if she is behind me.
Olivia’s owner knows my history. He thought this could be good for both of us. He is a good man. He gave us both a chance to heal.
Still I am aware that when Livi grows full size she will become dangerous to me. Olivia could break a long-term friendship.
(Note:The actual 5 days with Olivia occurred April 9-13. The dates here refer to when I wrote about it and/or posted it.)
