I asked Sterling and he said yes. After all it is his carpets she will be pissing and shitting on.

You see Pearl and I are on a mission.

Last Saturday, Sterling, Pearl and I went over to visit my friends. They have a new dog named Olivia. Olivia is a Sharpei, you know, one of those dogs that have extra skin that settles into rolls. Well, she doesn’t have the rolls yet, but when she grows up she will. Unfortunately she isn’t very pretty either. She has a big squared-off rectangle of a face and sad brown eyes. She spends most of her time avoiding people. Which is okay, except she hides herself away and won’t come when she is called, and when she appears she walks very gingerly with her tail tucked under. I think she was abused or dropped on her head when she was very young. She is only 2 months old now.

My friends work all day long and Olivia is alone. So they haven’t been able to give her the extra love she needs to get her back into the world.

Olivia comes to no one. But on Saturday I tried to see if I could charm her to me. Instead of going towards her, I stood still and called her, just patiently and calmly I said her name over and over, and told her what a good girl she was. I only looked directly at her a couple of times. I once read somewhere that any creature with eyes set in the front of their faces were predators and to stare is equal to inviting combat. But in my peripheral vision I can see her inching up to me.

So there I am standing in the backyard reaching down to pet the girl. I keep petting her and telling her nice things about her princess self. Then I stop and stand up. I want to see if she trusts me yet. Olivia lays flat down on the ground covering up my boots. Olivia and I are glued in place. Damn. I want to move but I feel like I need to allow her to stay as long as she wants, and everyone else has gone into the house and Olivia and I are statues.

She stayed about 15 minutes, which for her is a fifth of a lifetime.

Saturday night when Sterling and I returned from dinner I discussed the idea of bringing Olivia over to our house for two weeks. She could hang out with Pearl and me. We could help her learn to trust again and then we could send her back out into the world all strong. She could run errands with us and learn to strut around the block. I’ll give her a pink bow so peeps think she is cuter than she really is.

Pearl could teach Olivia. Pearl is one of those perfect dogs; he came in the package with Sterling. He has manners, doesn’t poo or pee in the house, and is very very handsome. He’s a great dog, cuddly, yet he likes his own time too. Pearl is groovy-dog-stuck-in-my-heart.

Sterling is there too. And he doesn’t kiss dogs on the mouth or tongue them. Which makes him perfect too.

I called my friends and asked them if Olivia could come over for a healing vacation and they thought it was a great idea.

Tomorrow Pearl and I pick up Olivia!

Only thing is that I had to give Pearl some rules:

1. No sex. She is too young and sex would just confuse her. She isn’t healed enough for sex anyway. She would just be giving it up to make Pearl not bite her.

2. Bite her if she makes a mess on the rug. She would take it better from another dog rather than from a giant human.

Wish us luck!
