"At last he lost
patience; he was being sued; his capital was out, and unless he got some
in he should be forced to take back all the goods she had received" (Flaubert
133)
Monsieur Lheureux
is a very influential man in; he has connections everywhere, and knows about
everyones financial problems, usually because he is the one who causes them.
He is a manipulative and sinister merchant who makes sure he never comes
out looking the bad guy. He is a “Gascon by birth but Norman
by adoption, he combines (combined) his southern loquaciousness with Cauchois
shrewdness” (Flaubert 113). He is a bit chubby, has white hair
and dark eyes. No one actually knows what his previous profession was,
but we all know he is a master with numbers; he can do the most difficult
“calculations in his head” (Flaubert 114). He is sweet
talker, and tells people what the want to hear until he has them in his pocket,
then he enjoys watching them suffer. It even seems he rather see people
squirm for the cash they owe him, rather than receive his money. This
is what he did with poor Emma Bovary, kept on giving her loans so she could
buy things that she wanted but could never afford. He keeps on manipulating
her, and pushing her deeper into debt, one time she paid him off pay not
charging one of Charles’s medical bills. One time he overcharged
Emma for some luggage equipment, which made Charles take a greater loan,
he not only corrupts the people he is in business but he ruins their entire
families financial situation. This despicable man even coerced Emma
to take Power of Attorney, so she would have full control of the family’s
assets, so he could put her in greater ruin. Even after her death he
was still manipulating, at her funeral he complimented her, but as soon as
she was put into the ground, he was right back demanding his payment.
This man is despicable and manipulative, I can’t belive we have such
a powerful man tarnishing the name of our great to of Yonville.
