"...As he was a partisan of progress, he coneived the patriotic idea that Yonville, in order to keep up the fore, ought to have some operations for strephopody or club-foot" (Flaubert 122)

We are at a point in the advancement of mankind where we must embrace new technology, speed the progress of civilization towards the future.  Like “our good king” in his leadership of France, I have taken it upon myself to aid, assist the advancement of the Yonville region.  From chocolate to new medical techniques to hydroelectric belts, I lead this small town in knowledge of the new.  As a University Professor imparting facts and information to his ignorant students, so have I assisted and taught my fellow man.  Look below for my thoughts on chocolate to beggary to hydroelectric belts to studies on Yonville.

Beggary:
The following are a few of my submissions to the Rouen Beacon.  In them, I describe the depravity of a vagabond, a monstrous blind man, who terrorized travelers to the area with this hideous features, his death like calls, and his supposed cry for help.  [As a side note:  I tried my utmost to help this unfortunate creature.  Yet, he would not follow my orders, both my medical and social advice.  Men like him impede the progress of mankind, as they repel the knowledge that paves the road to advancement.  The fact is that he did not want help, but found a sick satisfaction in torturing those around him, making them suffer, as he has!]
“Travelers to the fertile fields of Picardy have probably noticed, on the Bois-Guillaume hill, a wretched creature afflicted with a horrible facial wound.  He annoys travelers, persecutes them,  imposes a veritable tax on them.  Are we still in those monstrous days of the Middle Ages when vagabonds were permitted to display in our public places the leprosy and scrofula they had brought back from the Crusades?” (Flaubert 317)
“Despite the laws against vagrancy, the approaches to our large cities continue to be infested by bands of the poor.  Among them are some who move about alone and who perhaps are not the least dangerous.  What is the municipal government going to do about it?”  (Flaubert 317)
“Yesterday, on the Bois-Guillaume hill, a skittish horse--” (Flaubert 317) threw his feeble rider, an old woman of seventy, to her death!  Madame Viejais was traveling to nearby town of Blanche-Macabre in order to visit her ailing daughter, Mademoiselle Viejais.  En route, the elder Viejais was a accosted by a beggarly blind man, disfigured to the point of monstrosity.  Mme. Viejais’ horse, frightened by the funereal voice and grotesque features of the vagabond, unfortunately flung his humanitarian passenger to a most horrific death.  People of France, I implore you;  how much longer must this vicious assault continue.  This beggarly man, a monster defined both by his hideous features and personality, has caused enough turmoil in our lives.  Not only has he disrupted every traveler’s peace of mind, but also has he effected the death of a beloved citizen of our community, of France, of humanity.  Shall we stand idly by as more and more attacks are performed by this outcast of civilization?  No!  Raise your voices to this cause, get the government to help her defenseless patriots!  Let justice be done!
An update:
Due to the valorous efforts of myself, this diabolical man has been subdued—committed to an asylum, PERMANENTLY!!!  This just shows that progress cannot be impeded.
Chocolate:
Chocolate, what a wonderful food!  The sweet taste has many medicinal values.  That is why I have introduced the latest developments of chocolate production, Cho-ca and Revalentia to this area.  See this interesting website for more details on the development and history of chocolate:

Hydroelectric belts:
What is this exciting device?  An advance of technology that rejuvenates the body, mind, and soul—a veritable Fountain of Youth.  The color of gold, it is a powerful piece of machinery, that brings wealth, passion to its wearers.
