Indoor Air Quality And Your Health

by: News Canada

How to help your home "breathe"

(NC)-Is your home waiting to exhale? Most homes today are so well insulated that they can actually trap indoor pollutants and retain extremely high levels of humidity. In fact, recent studies indicate that the air inside your home can be up to 100 times more polluted than the surrounding outdoor air. More about this...

There are several options available today for homeowners who want to help their homes "breathe" and improve their indoor air quality.

The first and most simple step is to ventilate your home by opening windows and letting fresh air inside. The use of ceiling fans can also help circulate this "fresh" air in certain rooms. But this solution remains somewhat insufficient, as it's difficult to ventilate each room in your home without excessive energy losses in winter. Not to mention this outside air is not filtered and may contain many pollutants and allergens as well.

Another option is to install fans and humidifiers in high humidity areas like bathrooms, kitchens and basements.

This method is effective to circulate the indoor air and create a more healthy and comfortable environment when used regularly. But, yet again, this solution is lacking if you want to obtain clean air throughout all the rooms of your home. This is because only certain rooms are benefiting and you are not allowing fresh filtered outside air to enter. More about this...

According to Etienne Chabot, Product Manager for Venmar Ventilation, the country's leader in state-of-the-art air ventilation systems, ventilation combined with filtration is the most effective way of improving indoor air quality and eliminating harmful pollutants.

"Proper ventilation is crucial for optimal indoor air quality. Ventilation dilutes the air of pollutants in your home and revitalizes stale air." Chabot said. "For your home to 'breathe' effectively it needs a constant source of fresh, filtered outdoor air to flow through, resulting in improved indoor air quality."

While ventilation is a very good means of controlling excess humidity and lowering the concentration of indoor air pollutants, few home heating and cooling systems, including forced air-heating systems, mechanically bring fresh air into the house. This is because most systems are more concerned with air temperature than actual air quality.

Venmar's new Whole-House HEPA Air Purification system, on the other hand, combines heat recovery ventilation and high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration. Each of the three models in its new series (HEPA 1000, 2000, and 3000), is designed to remove up to 99.97% of particles such as pollen, fungus spores, and tobacco smoke from the air resulting in a clean, healthy living environment. Venmar's new HEPA series is now available at your local Home Depot, Rona Home and Garden, Soo Mills. For more details on indoor air quality visit: http://www.venmar-ventilation.com/.
