Q: What is indoor air pollution?

A: It's quite simple really, whatever is in the air can get into your lungs. Chemical and biological contaminants in the air affect respiratory health. Chemical contaminants can be either gases, such as carbon monoxide, or particulates (substances small enough to remain suspended in the air). Biological contaminants originate from living things, and are produced in the form of gases of particulates, such as spores. Research suggests that pollutant levels in some homes may be 2-100 times higher than outdoors. More about this...

Q: What are the sources of chemical and biological contaminants?

A: Common sources of chemical contaminants include:

tobacco smoke, cleaning products
paints and solvents
pesticides
personal care products
carpets

Common sources of biological contaminants include:

high humidity areas (e.g., bathrooms, basements, and kitchens)
humidifiers and dehumidifiers
pollen,
bacteria,
viruses,
fungi (moulds, spores)
pets (fur and dander).

How can indoor pollution affect your health?

The average person spends 90% of their time indoors, surrounded by a vast array of products, furnishing, appliances which frequently release contaminants that pollute indoor air. Prolonged exposure to high concentrations of these contaminants may lead to serious health problems such as asthma, chemical sensitivities and allergies. More about this...

Whose health is at risk from indoor pollution?

Everybody can be affected by high levels of air pollution, but there are some people who are at particular risk:

children, due to their developing physiology and unique activity pattern;
seniors, particularly those living with a pre-existing health condition;
pregnant women; and
individuals, living with pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma.

Q: How can I control indoor pollution in my home?

A: There are three main principles to follow to help you control indoor pollution in your home:

(1) Source Control: controlling sources of indoor pollution creates a healthier home. For example, get rid of chemical products you don't need, keep products you do need as far away from your living space as possible, take air polluting jobs outside, choose low-emission cleaning products. More about this...
(2) Maintain your home systems and appliances. Regularly maintain your humidifiers and dehumidifiers often for optimal performance, be aware of combustion pollutants from oil, gas, or wood, clean dust out of your systems as they will work more efficiently. More about this...
(3) Ventilate. However, the best option is to use mechanical ventilation combined with HEPA filtration, such as Venmar's Whole House HEPA Air Purification System. It works to reduce humidity, volatile compounds (gases, moulds), and maintains healthy indoor air quality. The combination of filtration and ventilation from Venmar's Hepa system is the best way to achieve optimal results. More about this...
