Foo Fighters "Foo Fighters"

"Dave's reappearance in the music scene after Nirvana."

Best Tracks: Big Me, Weenie Beenie, I'll Stick Around, For All The Cows

In the beginning there was Dave Grohl. Fresh out of Nirvana, Dave was ready to release the steam that had been building since the dying days and departure of the famous grunge band. Dave basically wanted to break the label of being "That Nirvana Drummer" and before the demise of the band he had written and recorded the songs that you hear on this album.

Well actually it was originally a demo called "Pocketwatch" in which some of the tracks from it were recorded and put on this disc. So basically what you hear on this album is purely Dave playing or using some electronic device to simulate an instrument since there was no band when this album was done. Afterwards others joined and they actually turned into a real band, but that's for later discussion.

The songs on this album are very obviously just start-up material that doesn't seem liek it took very long to write (i.e. "Watershed" whose chorus is basically "I want to swim in a Watershed/ I want to listen to Flowerhead"). Most of the songs seem to generic to be taken seriously ("For All The Cows","This Is A Call") but regardless the instrumentation is very good. Whether it be Dave playing or just an instrument simulator it sounds very good for it being a debut album.

Even with it's most off-the-wall songs it still seems to try and keep a straight face with "I'll Stick Around" with its great shots at Courtney Love, "Exhausted" and "X-Static". But besides those songs the album is basically all instruments and very unimaginative lyrics. It definately showed signs of a rock band that was on the verge of something great. And for once it was a good spin-off band that sounded nothing like its predecessor.
