[The Summer of 2003]

Much like the Summer 2k3 music section here just some of my opinions on some summer 2003 movies.

The Good

"Finding Nemo"-Once again Pixar proves that you can make a very good movie without being overly violent or profane. "Nemo" ended up being the highest grossing movie of the summer and for once it is well deserved. A very funny and well written script combined with some great voice casting (Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres, Wilem DeFoe) makes this picture work much like Pixar's previous works.Grade- B+

Pirates Of The Carribean- Sure, if you take away Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush you would probably have a movie that's just a step above the rest of the Pirate genre. But thier performances alone deserve very high merit along with decent work by the beautiful Kiera Knightly ("Bend It Like Beckham") and Orlando Bloom. Thier are some major plot holes which they don't try cover up but in the end it's not meant to be a highly intelligent affair, just a very enjoyable one.Grade- B+

Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines- It wasn't as good as its brilliant predessor but for having a new writer and director it stayed very true to its Apocalyptic theme and feel. Arnold proves that he is much more interesting as a robot than a real person and minus the less than satisfying Clare Danes, the supporting cast gives great performances as well. Even with all the cheesy jokes (Did we really need to resurrect the Talk to the hand joke?) it exceeded my expectations and proves that not all sequels have to suck.Grade- B+

Seabiscuit-Every so often there's a few sports movies that surpass the cliched Hollywood sports movie and shine on thier own (Think "Remember The Titans","Rudy","Hoosiers",even "Varsity Blues"). "Seabiscuit" is a new entrance in the better sports-film category with a great cast and a good script. Tobey Macguire once proves that he is more just "that Spiderman guy" with a great portrayal of Seabuscuit's jockey as well as the well-deserved Oscar winner Chris Cooper and the underrated Jeff Bridges as his coaches. Some may argue that it gets a bit too sappy and in a way it does yet it never goes too far. Especially in a disappointing summer film season where it was almost one indistinguishable action film or sequel, this was a breath of fresh air.Grade- B

The Matrix: Reloaded- It was considered to be the most anticipated movie of the summer and possibly, the year. Although it seemed to be focused more on trying to pull off mesmerizing fights and effects like the first than actually trying to make a concrete plot, it was still one of the more intelligent movies of the summer (sans the awful rave/sex scene.) But as I said before it all depends now more than ever one the final installation "The Matrix Revolutions".Grade- B

The Italian Job- I had very low hopes entering the theater. After seeing the previews it looked like every other turncoat crime caper with a decent cast. But, to my surprise, it was very enjoyable. That's not to say that this movie is great Hollywood filmmaking, it purely relies on the energy of its fresh cast (especially Seth Green, Mos Def, Ed Norton and Jason Statham) and its completely over-the-top Mini Cooper car chases. If you're looking for intelligent filmmaking, don't see this. But if you're looking for a good time (i.e. "Fast And The Furious" cheesy fun) than this should satisfy.Grade- B-

The So-So and The Ugly

Bruce Almighty- After a disastrous turn in "The Majestic" Jim Carrey returns to comedy in top form. Unfortunately his comedy only holds up for half o fthe movie before falling into a "Patch Adams" type gooshiness that squashes some of the really funny humor in the beginning. Regardless, Jim Carrey has never had so much energy and Morgan Freeman is a better God than those who have played him/her before (i.e. Alanis, George Burns). A decent comedy but could've been better.Grade- C

American Wedding-The final installment of the American Pie series is exactly what you'd expect, alot of insanely unbelievable situations and crude humor. But this time around it's not as funny as before. Jokes about eating dog crap, pubic hairs, humping dogs are humorous but don't really connect like the jokes from the first two. The characters that didn't really matter didn't come back, minus Nadia who should've returned at least for the wedding (C'mon what is Shannon Elizabeth doing that she would skip a cameo appearance in a successful series?). It's unfortunate that the movie basically becomes a platform for Stifler who never made an intresting character but was always good with the wisecracks, but after given an hour of screentime he becomes very annoying. Plus, Thomas Ian Nicholas who has been good in the past two films is given about three sentences and isn't given a girl. Jason Biggs plays his role well, same goes for Eugene Levy and they make the best of the stale script but need to make sure that this is the final American Pie affair.Grade- C-

The Hulk- For all the hype it was given and the direction of a fantastic director this was a huge disappointment. It lacks the giddy energy of "Spider Man", the darkness of "Batman" and above all an interseting main character. Even without comparisons to much better comic-book films this movie falls flat. Sure it's tough to make an interestign character out of a scientist, but if Indiana Jone scan make archeology seem cool then you can do something with a scientist. And although Eric Bana and Jennifer Connelly are both good actors, they seem to be sleepwalking through the motions as the nonesensical plot dirves on to its anticlimatic, artsy ending. Ang Lee had a long winning streak going for him, too bad he had to ruin it with this film. Next time leave the superhero fare with someone like Tim Burton.Grade- D

Charlie's Angels- Full Throttle-How could you go wrong with Cameron Diaz, Lucy Lui and Drew Barrymore kicking butt in skimpy clothes? The first film proved that a movie doesn't have to have the leats bit of intelligence or plot to be fun. This time around it makes even less sense and isn't nearly as fun. Bernie Mac cracks a few good jokes and is much more entertaining than the dull Bill Murray (at least in the Bosley role), minus a few bad jokes that fizzle. The plot skips around like it was playing hipscotch and never even seems to make the least bit of sense. Add a few compeltely uninteresting and non-threatening bad guys and you've got a B-movie that doesn't even have a cheesy, fun side, just a soulless machine.Grade- D-
