Foo Fighters "The Colour And The Shape"

"The solidifying of the Foo Fighters as a band."

Best Tracks: Can't name them all

Two years after Foo Fighters' debut they went back into the studio wanting to overshadow the first album. They thought the first album wasn't the best representation of the band since thier wasn't a band when it was recorded. Dave Grohl also wanted to get a few things off of his chest like his failed marriage and the suicide of his good friend and former bandmate Kurt Cobain. After it was all said and done they had lost thier drummer who quit and were on the verge of losing thier guitarist and former Nirvana member Pat Smear due to clashes of ego. But a great record came out in the process.

"The Colour And The Shape" sounded and felt more fleshed-out and emotional than basically anything off of thier debut CD. The songs also dealt with very heavy issues such as divorce ("Enough Space","Monkeywrench"), Kurt Cobain ("February Stars", "Walking After You"), Love (the poppy "See You","Up In Arms"), and anger ("Wind Up", "Hey Johnny Park!"). It basically was a huge emotinal release for Dave and you can tell that the band put 110% into this record. The best thing about this album is not only is a step above anything the Foo Fighters had done up to that point but it also made a huge connection with its deep lyrics and tight, heavy instrumentation.

It's no wonder why this album is considered the best to basically any Foo Fighter and for that matter any non-Foo Fighter fan who just heard the singles ("Everlong","Monkeywrench","My Hero") which were all very diverse and extremely well written. The Foo Fighters proved that they had beat the sophomore slump with this excellent CD and on the same token proved that they could and would outlast the "that Nirvana drummer's band" label by giving themself a name and not trying to copy Nirvana's style. It definately made fans very interested on what road the Foos would take next.
