Foo Fighters "There Is Nothing Left To Lose"

"The aftermath of 'The Colour And The Shape'"

Best Tracks: MIA, Next Year, Aurora, Live-In Skin

The fear that the Foo Fighters wouldn't make it was over. They had made a name for themselves with "The Colour And The Shape" and wanted to continue making great rock music with "There Is Nothing Left To Lose". Unlike TCATS' hard rock feel this was taken with much more of an easy, laid-back feel. Since they recorded it in a house that they had rented in Virginia (much like what Incubus would do a few years later) there was no record execs telling them what sounded good and bad which gave them much more creative control. The Foos didn't want to re-hash thier first two albums and weren't really angry or angst filled as they were the first two albums therefore making TINLTL a much more breezy, soft album.

Although they still keep it serious with soft songs like "Aurora","Live-In Skin", "MIA" they show a much more fun and easy-going side with pokes at people with obsessions about facial imperfections ("Breakout), fake Hollywood actors/Courtney Love ("Stacked Actors"), messing around ("Gimme Stitches") and just enjoying life (the beautiful "Ain't It The Life"). The Foos only show traces of thier older material in the hard-hitting "Stacked Actors" and parts of "Breakout" but for the most part the songs only range from alternative to soft rock which seems to divide opinions. In my opinion I thought it was a great move, it proved that they didn't always need to complain to make songs and also didn't need to have neck-snapping riffs to rock. It also was very wierd for this album to even come out at a time when Korn and Limp Bizkit were at the peaks of thier career to have the most hard-rocking band release an album that completely went against everything that was popular.

Although they did take a few missteps with a the somewhat over-whiny "Stacked Actors" and that eventhough most of the songs are good and well written they still seem like they're not the absolute best thing that the Foos could've done. But, regardless, the Foos experimented with an album that is both a blessing and a curse for them. On one hand it was a beautiful expression of what they were feeling at the time but on the other they had to face the people that claimed they were going soft. Either way they stood by and supported thier material which made them an even more respectable band and also a\ much more respectable album.
