In the opening game of the tournament, Senegal in their first finals pulled off a real shocker as they beat the World and European Champions 1-0 to open their world cup account. Papa Bouba Diop scored the only goal of the match to stun the crowd and the French. From as early as 30 minutes, Senegal held on to their lead as a very shocked and frustrated France surged forward to look for an equaliser. Trezeguet, Zidane, Henry and Vieira all went close but the credit had to go to Senegal who must have dreamt about such a result.
