Goalkeepers 

1-Fabian Carini (Juventus) Born: 26.12.79
World-class goalkeeper whose saves were crucial in helping Uruguay qualify, especially in the play-off against Australia. Despite this, he is a reserve at Juventus and Uruguayans are worried this could take the edge off his game. Began his international career at the Copa America in 1999. 

12-Gustavo Munua (Nacional) Born: 27.1.78
Carini's reserve. Raised at Nacional, he was in the team which finished runners-up in the World Youth Championship in 1997.    

23-Federico Elduayen (Penarol) Born: 25.6.77
Third choice goalkeeper, Elduayen was raised at Penarol and made his debut in the friendly against Singapore just before the World Cup.

Defenders 

3-Alejandro Lembo (Nacional) Born: 15.2.78
Montero's partner in the centre of the defence is already a seasoned international at 24, having played in the team which finished as runners-up to Brazil in the 1999 Copa America and taken part in 17 of Uruguay's 19 qualifiers. One of Pua's proteges from the 1997 World Youth championship. 

14-Gonzalo Sorondo (Inter Milan) Born: 9.10.79
Turned professional with modest Montevideo club Defensor Sporting, joining Inter Milan for the 2001/2 season where he has only had a handful of starts so far. Made his debut in the World Cup qualifier away to Colombia and was called into central defence several times to cover for Montero's suspensions 

4-Paolo Montero (Juventus) Born: 3.9.71
Top defender who is prepared to use fair means or foul to stop opposing strikers. A regular fixture at Juventus but has also smashed all records for red cards and suspensions. Says that cunning is part of the modern game. An international since 1991 and captain since 1997. 

6-Dario Rodriguez (Penarol) Born: 17.9.74
A stalwart in the qualifiers, making 15 apperances at left back. Has spent most of his career with Penarol and was among the nine players who spent a week in police custody following the infamous brawl on the pitch at a Nacional v Penarol derby in 2000. Made his debut against Hungary in early 2000. 

19-Joe Bizera (Penarol) Born: 17.5.80
Promising defender who made just one appearance in the qualifiers. Raised at Penarol and played in the experimental team which Uruguay sent to the 2001 Copa America.

2-Gustavo Mendez (Nacional). 3.2.71
Mendez has been surprisingly recalled for the World Cup after losing the right back position to Washington Tais in the second half of the World Cup qualifiers. His international career stretches back nine years and he was in the squad which won the Copa America in 1995. 

Midfielders 

10-Fabian O'Neill (Juventus) Born: 14.10.73
His international career stretches back to the 1993 Copa America in Ecuador, however he has only been picked once since Victor Pua took charge as coach. Raised with Nacional, he spent four years with Italy's Cagliari before moving to Juventus at the start of the 2000/1 season. 

7-Gianni Guigou (AS Roma) Born: 22.2.75
Uruguay have fielded Guigou as both a defensive midfielder and left-back. He was part of the experimental team taken by Pua to the 1999 Copa America and has played regularly since. Began his career at Nacional, joining Roma for the 2000-01 season. 

22-Gonzalo de los Santos (Valencia) Born: 19.7.76
Defensive midfielder who was completely ignored during Daniel Passarella's reign but quickly regained his place after being re-called by Pua. A Penarol product, he has reached Valencia via Merida and Malaga.

16-Marcelo Romero (Malaga) Born: 4.7.76
Midfielder who has won most of his caps in friendlies. Won the Uruguayan championship in successive years with Penarol before signing for Malaga last year. 

15-Nicolas Olivera (Sevilla) Born: 30.5.78
Attacking midfielder who makes penetrating runs from deep. Played 13 qualifiers, scoring three goals. Another Defensor Sporting product, he made his international debut at the 1997 Confederations Cup. Left Uruguay in 1997 and, after a year at Valencia, moved to his present team.

5-Pablo Garcia (Venezia) Born: 11.5.77
A key member of the team, he holds the midfield together, breaking up the opposition's attacks with his anticipation and strength and setting up moves for his own side with his excellent left-foot passing. Also possesses a powerful shot. One of Pua's generation, played in the 1997 World Youth Cup team.    

Forwards 

9-Dario Silva (Malaga) Born: 2.11.72
Uruguay's top scorer in the qualifying competition with six goals. Raised with Defensor Sporting, he won the Uruguayan championship in three successive seasons with Penarol before moving to Europe. First stop was Cagliari, then he went to Espanyol in Spain and finally Malaga, scoring 13 goals in the 2000/1 season. Made his international debut in 1994. 

11-Federico Magallanes (Venezia) Born: 22.8.76
A fiery forward, he did not command a regular place in the qualifiers but scored the penalty in the 1-0 win over Brazil. Played in the team which reached the final of the Copa America in 1999. Nomadic club career with two stints at Racing Santander, a year with Defensor Sporting and now Venezia. 

18-Richard Morales (Nacional) Born: 21.2.75
Powerful striker who was little used in the qualifying campaign until he scored two goals in the 3-0 win over Australia which clinched Uruguay's place. Twice ended up in police custody in 2000 - once for his part in a brawl on the pitch following a Penarol-Nacional derby and then after a fight in a nightclub. 

13-Sebastian Abreu (Cruz Azul) Born: 17.10.76
Known as the Madman, Abreu made only two fleeting qualifying appearances but recent form for his club, plus two goals in a friendly against South Korea, have helped his bid for a starting place. Spent most of his career with Argentina's San Lorenzo before joining Cruz Azul at the start of the year. 

21-Diego Forlan (Manchester United) 19.5.79.
Forlan made his name with Argentine club Independiente but was only picked by his country after making the move to Manchester United this year. He scored on his debut against Saudi Arabia in March. 

20-Alvaro Recoba (Inter Milan) Born: 17.3.76
A sublimely talented player with a wicked left-foot shot, though critics suggest his work-rate could be improved. Among the players caught up in Europe's false passport scandal. Made his debut in 1995 but has never played at the Copa America. 

8-Gustavo Varela (Nacional) Born: 14.5.78
Began his international career by playing in the qualifiers for the Sydney Olympics and has now made the step to senior level, playing in three qualifiers. Raised at Nacional where he has already won two Uruguayan championships. 

17-Mario Regueiro (Racing Santander) Born: 14.9.78
One of Pua's proteges, he played in the 1997 and 1999 World Youth Cups. Stepped up to full international in November 2000 when he was thrown in at the deep end - a World Cup qualifier away to Argentina. A regular substitute during the second half of Uruguay's qualifying campaign. Raised at modest Cerro, he joined Montevideo giants Nacional in 1998 and made the leap to Spain last year.
