"None came out alive..."

:: Main :: Books :: Deathtrap Dungeon ::

Deathtrap Dungeon was released in 1998 for the Playstation console. Although many people had probably forgotten  the glory days of the Fighting fantasy books, by this time reduced to a dusty pile in your local libraries, Deathtrap Dungeon gave us all we could wish for with plenty of Livingston's ideas from the game book appearing on-screen.

The below information serves as a brief review of sorts, although no final point score is given, it hints at some of the games strong points.

 'Chain dog', one of the playable characters

  Roughly based around the Fighting Fantasy game book number 6 of the same name, Deathtrap Dungeon would send you, one of two characters, the male (pictured left), a barbarian named 'Chain dog', or a ruthless woman named 'Red lotus'.

Braving the dungeon means defying Baron Sukumvit, the creator of this fiendish labyrinth and thus freeing the people of fang from his tyranny.

 As you can imagine this is no easy feat, the dungeon is huge, with traps and enemies aplenty.

 One great thing I noticed upon opening the case to Deathtrap dungeon was the fact that a detailed bestiary was included, full of new and some old faces I recognized from the original book. Surprisingly this also worked very well with the game as hints could be obtained by reading each baddies stats.

The game play is rather good, several combinations of overhead slashes, thrusts and spins can be created with the sword, while the block feature is very necessary for avoiding the more powerful enemies.

Many spells and projectile weapons can be obtained, making for an impressive arsenal.

 An Orc swordsman. around 53 different creatures patrol the dungeon, and non of them should be taken lightly.
