Easy steps to first time
hosting
Travelers are usually
kept by the host family for one week. Unless other arrangements have
been made with the host family, return your visiting traveler promptly.
Children are excited and depend on their travelers coming home in a
timely manner.
-
Email
the traveler's family that he/she has arrived safely.
-
Take
your visiting traveler with you to events, museums, relatives homes,
anywhere you like. Snap pictures of them having
fun.
-
Write the events of the day in their journal. Include people they've
visited, sites they've seen, even if they just lazed around that day
with you or your children.
-
When
it is time to send the traveler back home, email the family to let
them know when their traveler will begin his/her journey home.
Although the only requirement to be returned is the journal and
traveler, you may include pictures, post cards, stickers, or
anything else that you want to in the package. Remember that
the larger the package, the more postage costs, especially for
overseas travelers.
The main thing is to
keep it fun as well as educational. We have a wall map that we mark the
locations of where our travelers have been, then research the state or
country. We also find the latitude and longitude as well as distance
from where we live, the customs and holidays associated with that
country.
Flat Travelers is a
wonderful experience for children and adults alike. What better way to
incorporate Geography, History, and Math than with Flat Travelers? They
make learning fun and exciting. It has brought us many friends from
abroad and a closeness that cannot be matched by any other source.
Above all, have fun!
