1915-1929

1/16/1915: The Cleveland Plain Dealer has a contest to determine the team's new name. The winning entry ends up being Indians. It was chosen to honor Louis Sockalexis, the first Native American Major Leaguer. Sockalexis played for the Cleveland Spiders of the National League from 1897-1899.

2/21/1916: Charles Somers sells the Indians to James Dunn.

9/24/1916: Marty Kavanaugh hits baseball's first-ever pinch hit grand slam in a 5-3 win over the Red Sox.

9/10/1919: Ray Chapman pitches a no-hitter to beat the Yankees 3-0 in New York. Sadly, the next season, Chapman would be killed by a pitch thrown by Yankees pitcher Carl Mays. Some say Mays threw it intentionally, as Mays was accused of doing so to other batters previously.

10/2/1920: The Indians beat the Tigers 10-1 in Detroit to clinch their first pennant.

10/5/1920: In Game 5 of the World Series, Bill Wambsganss makes the only unassissted triple play in WS history. The Indians ended up beating the Brooklyn Dodgers (now Los Angeles) 8-1.

10/12/1920: The Indians beat the Dodgers 8-1 to win the 1920 World Series. The Tribe won the best of nine series 5 games to 2.

4/14/1925: In the season opener, the Indians beat the St. Louis Browns 21-14. 12 of the Indians runs came in the 8th inning. Charlie Jamieson had four hits in the victory, including a home run. Indians vs. Browns, how ironic!

8/28/1926: Dutch Levsen pitches and wins both games in a double header against the Red Sox. The Indians won the first game 6-1 and the second 5-1.

5/13/1929: The Indians play the Yankees in a game in which players from both teams are the first to wear numbers on the back of their jerseys.
