St. Michael's Cemetery is a large, flat, cemetery located at 2205 Stratford Avenue in Stratford, Connecticut. (St. Michael's contains at least 65,000 burials.) The oldest burials date to the mid-19th century, and a significant majority of those interred here are of Italian ancestry (followed by a large number of Irish descent). What the cemetery lacks in grandeur, it makes up for with hidden charm; although there are only a few family mausoleums and ostentatious monuments, there are many, simpler, memorials with unique design and striking detail, often accompanied by touching photographs of the deceased.
Estimated number of interments, as of January 2024: at least 64,844.
Photos were taken 17 November 2008 and 10 June 2022.
The centerpiece of the cemetery.
One of the many markers designating the final resting place of a child. The name is too obscured to determine whom this marker belongs to, but the date of death is between 1900-1909.
Maria Sincheck (1857 - 1908) was a member of the Woodmen Circle, the ladies' auxiliary of the Woodmen of the World. Buried with her are her sons, Michael (1885 - 1908) and Joseph (1891 - 1949).
Located in an older section of the cemetery, where many children are buried, is this random mini-obelisk, with a child's face protruding from it. The only inscription is "VDI" with what appear to be brooms etched beneath it.
Saverio Nechols (born 1896) served during WWI and had suffered severe exposure to gas while fighting in France. He died in 1922, just four years after the end of the war, at the age of 26.
