Split Cocks
At the moment I have two split cocks and one possible. One is 50/50 which means the first cross. This is breed from a male Alex and a female Lutino Indian Ringnecks. The second one is a ¾ cross which is a generation further on. These two cocks I have paired to normal green hens so that I get size and hopefully better fertility. The third one is a possible 15/16 which is the last one closest to pure. The only way I can find out if he is split is to test mate to a normal hen and see if I get a Lutino chick. There are no visible signs that he is split, and any of his progeny will be classed as pure. I also have a Lutino 15/16 hen; she is mated to a normal Green cock. With them I hope to breed pure Split cocks to breed with in a couple of years.
There are a few differences between a normal green cock and a split. They are smaller in size until you get a higher class mutation. There wing patches are a rusty-orange colour in stead of a chestnut. There body features such as head, beak and chest are smaller as well. I haven’t heard of anyone in Australia with a Lutino cock and like every other breeder, I would like to be the first or just to breed one myself.
