"...Both ordinary and remarkable people have vanished, stirring the imagination to wonder about 'certain histories of children and men and women who vanished strangely from the earth. They would be seen by a peasant in the fields walking towards some green and round hillock, and seen no more on the earth.'

"An Indian story from Oklahoma, where the mysterious mound-builders once flourished, says that an odd scroll was found near one mound, concerning a 1th century Spaniard who had been part of the Coronado expedition. The man became separated from his company and somehow came upon a subterranean entrance, into which he ventured, never to return.

"Disappearances connected with caverns and HE research are too numerous to mention. Certain areas. like California, seem most susceptible. Near Death Valley, for example, an Indian trapper tells of his grandfather who lived in a "strange country" for three years, beneath the Panamint Mountains after having entered a tunnel in Emigrant Canyon. In northern California, around the Sonoma area, there have been several unexplained disappearances along a stretch of road 110 miles north of San Francisco in (the) lake country of Mendocino County.

"'Even trucks have vanished... all the U.S. Government's. The U.S. Government has noted the area as rough, unsurveyable, and UNEXPLORED.' Notorious for anomalies, this region is among the leading 'entrance points' in the U.S. In the thick of it - a region which has no wind, where forest fires won't burn, where the silence is so perfect 'you can hear insects running on the ground' - in its midst is a cave that 'has steps leading down and there is no sound when a rock is thrown in."

The man reporting all this was a cattleman homesteading on government land; but 'too many incidents to be told... All in all we stayed there about two years before we quit." (From Bruce Walton, INNER EARTH ENTRANCE series -- angelfire.com/empire/fireangels/IEE.html...)

"... another legion vanished, this time back in the Roncador Mountains, just three years after Col. Fawcett's disappearance there (in Brazil). Carl Huni: 'When I was in Brazil I heard a lot about the underground caverns, and subterranean cities... A good part of the immigrants who helped in the uprising of General Isidro Lopez back in 1928 disappeared into these mountains and were never seen again... Finally they made a truce and let the 4000 troops go; about 3,000 of them went to Acre in the northwest and about 1,000 disappeared in the caverns. I heard the story consistently.'

"The above is quoted from THE HOLLOW EARTH by Dr. Raymond Bernard, A.B., M.A., Ph.D., who himself disappeared in Brazil in the late (19) sixties. Not withstanding savages and beasts, there is a mysterious district along the upper reaches of the Amazon River in which a number of explorers, from the U.S. and other countries, have gone and not returned.

"This opens up the question of the disappearance of remarkable men:

"-Fawcett and Bernard, inner earth explorers of this century.

"-Count St. Germain, into the Himalayan mass, at the close of the 18th century, (he promised to return)

"-Ambrose Bierce, the satirist, disappeared under similar circumstances after becoming interested in the Crystal Skull.

"-Doc Anderson, 'the man who sees tomorrow,' a known psychic who was initiated into the Asian pyramids; and promised to use his powers to locate tunnel entrances in the U.S.

"-William Beebe, the oceanographer who expressed his belief in the coming invasion of the earth by an underground race.

"of remarkable men who have gone, and returned, there is the account of the Iroquois Chief, who entered the Endless Caverns of Luray during the Civil War, to insure the safety of himself and his tribe. Entering a small opening near Sweetwater, Tennessee ("the Lost Sea of Tennessee still carries great unexplained mysteries"), the group did not surface until nine years later. They described their stay at 'God's Teepee' that existed below the great sea deep within the earth.

"These are not random cases. History demurs on cases or whole cultures slipping through her back door; but has no answers. Entry inside the earth is highly suspect considering native lore and the trail of evidence left by the ancients of Tibet and Afghanistan; the abandonment of Angkor Wat in Cambodia; and the quiet departure of the Egyptians. In more historical time, there was the patent disappearance of thousands, perhaps millions of the races of Inca, Maya, and (Colorado) Cliff Dwellers, each with extensive tribal knowledge of access to subterranean habitations, each making a clean break with the enturbulated surface world. Finally, there are the Lost Tribes of Israel, who, according to a now sizable literature, may be placed in the enchanted country inside the North Pole!.

"Enough of our negative argument of disappearances; promises to return are often tagged on to these stories. Let us wait and see...".
