Iron Curtain- 1946
Outer perimeter of Iron Curtain with 33 Feet high watch tower and vehicle patrol road
The Iron Curtain descended over Europe with a “verbal bombshell”. It happened
in June 1946, when British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, during the commencement speech at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, stated: “From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adria, an Iron Curtain has descended across the continent.”At that time Churchill himself could not imagine this description of the Iron Curtain would soon take on the form of: iron fences, mines, concrete barriers, barbed wire, booby-trapped death strips, watchtowers, concrete bunkers, and paved patrol roads. It razed churches, homes, even cemeteries; dividing towns into east and west, while sending off three million refugees running west before the Berlin Wall was erected. After the collapse the Soviet Union, the people of: Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and the former Yugoslavia demolished these structures, symbols of their enslavement.
